Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    I'm still nursing along three old computers that run under Windows XP because they still run the software I need -- and the printers and scanners. Thank God a real Compaq was built to go the long haul!

    But most new computers are beyond XP's capabilities.

    I keep wondering what good a newer, faster, shinier computer really IS when you can't do what you need to with it. Same for versions of Windows: what good is it if I can't PRODUCE with it? Most of Windows 10 is just flash and silliness -- endless apps that accomplish very little, and which I disable if I cannot uninstall. What I need and want is a production machine, not a play station.

    I guess Microsoft has forgotten that some of us actually use our computers for production, not entertainment.

    I totally agree. I have put off and put off buying a new computer and still am because of this. microsoft needs to listen to their customers. otherwise they wont have any left.

    We are ALL annoyed at Microsoft for that betrayal.

    And they think that offering a stupid, inadequate little photo gallery will buy back our faith? Fat chance! You don't need a photo gallery. You just create files and folders, and you organize your own pictures the way you want. If you need a "photo gallery," you are incompetent.

    What we need is the functionality of Picture it! Nothing else ever made such perfect collages. Nothing else made cutting an item out of a picture so easy.

    The real Picture It ended in 2000 -- nothing after that was ever as good. Digital Photo Pro was made to sort of look like Picture It, but it did not work as well. It was like using an whisk broom instead of an air brush. Nothing, nothing, nothing can or ever has replaced real Picture it!

    I have Picture It 2000 installed under both Windows 7 and Windows 10. It works slowly, and I can only use it with the workbench tab -- the projects tab just doesn't work no matter what I do -- so I'm still grinding out photo products nobody else can create.

    I just resent the hell out of the fact that Microsoft won't make a new version based on the old, powerful, production-conscious, real Picture It, or at least write a patch to make it fully functional under Windows 7 and 10. They can keep updating Windows 10 so it does everything you don't need -- how about something that would be of use for a change??
