Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    19You don't have to go back to the stone age to get a computer that will run Picture It quite normally. We're talking Windows XP here, after all, and a lot of people are still running it.

    The real problem may be finding a printer that will work with XP. Hp made some great printers in those days, and scouting out a working unit might make life a lot easier.

    For wide format, try looking for an HP Deskjet 1000c or 1120c. For 8x10 and 8x14, look for and HP PHotosmart 1115 or 1215. These are all great printers -- and the 1000c and 1120c still work under Windows 10. Nobody has written drivers for the 1115 or 1215 since Windows XP.

    Check on eBay for a copy of Windows XP. Microsoft still provides Service Pack 3 as a service for programmers, so SOMEBODY is still using XP for something out there!

    Microsoft told us when we invested what was big money in the year 2000 in software that we'd always be able to use it with any upgrade to the OS. It seems they lied.

    But hey, Windows 10 Keyboard and Mouse Center doesn't recognize my Microsoft mouse as a supported device, either.

    The best and most practical solution is to either run in a virtual machine or get an old computer dedicated to running this and other old software. It's a workable solution worth exploring. Resale and donation shops along with online auction sites should provide you with many options for old hardware.

    That Microsoft has ignored its users should be a learning experience - and something to consider when updating and upgrading and purchasing new products.

    There's plenty of older software that's superior and faster than the nonsense being marketed today. I myself still use this package because it gets the job done nicely and is what I would consider to be the modern-day version of the ancient Print Shop from Br0derbund back in the Apple II days.

    It is important to remember that new doesn't always = better. As evidenced by this long-running thread.

    Just for the record:  their response is zip.. zero..nothing.. they don't' want to talk about it..i even ask the better business bureau to talk to them about losing the ability to use a product purchased from them… they informed the bbb that they had no intention of doing anything differently than they had already done..

    Check the dates on these complaints… all the way back to 2009. Microsoft has closed the book on this.. and they aren't going to even talk to you about it.. it really **** me offf.. i have been told it will run on  older versions of internet explorer. I am considering using a computer totally for the purpose of using my picture it disc… install internet explorer older version before 7 and see what happens…
