Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    There simply is no alternative to Picture It. It is one of a kind.

    Every substitute stinks, including it's own dubious replacement, Digital Image Pro. A simple photo manager is easy to find, if anyone actually needs one; they are a dime a dozen. And while Digital Image pro does make collages after a fashion, they are not as nice as Picture its. The blending of outlines is nowhere near the same.

    The good news is that you can use Picture it with Windows 7 -- and even Windows 10. You just have to use it differently.

    I am using Picture It 2000 with both Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 10 Home Premium.  It's running in XP with service pack 2 mode under Windows 7 and in XP with service pack 3 mode under Windows 10.

    You have to have a clean install, with none of the (cough, cough) upgrades Microsoft created for Windows 7. Those are what keeps Picture It from installing.

    On Windows 10, I installed Picture it before the big Fall update arrived.

    In both cases, the Projects tab no longer works correctly. You have to do everything through the Workbench tab. Using "Get Picture," you can open navigate to the Content folder, where the picture art folder and the Projects folder are stored.

    You can open templates bu selecting, and dragging them to the filmstrip. You can open art and cut-outs the same way, and open them all at the same time.

    On the desktop, you can click on and switch to the template. You an then add additional art of cutouts you clicking on them and ether dragging them to the template or selecting "add to."

    If any of the items appears to be "dead" -- i.e., appears on the desktop but cannot be moved and have no green handles, you can select that item, then go to workbench and select "Size and Position," followed by "Flip."

    You don't have to select any task. Just leave the selections blank and click okay.

    The object will now be active, and so will all other objects in the composition.

    Don't ask me why this works; it just does -- on my computers, anyway.

    I don't know why Microsoft chose to stop fully supporting a program as perfect for its task as Picture It. I would have to call it the most brilliant program they ever made. Not knowing how to get along without it is what inspired me to all this experimentation to find a way to make it work!

    I cant load pictures from my chip to my computer any longer. Could someone help me to fix this. I have been able to load them until yesterday. Not sure what changed?

    I have and have been using Microsoft picture it 2000 and have been using it on my computer that has windows 7 on it, The work around I have found is to install it while windows 7 is in its infant stage, By this I mean before any microsoft updates have been installed on the system, The reason that I have found that it does not work is because of the internet explorer files that are updated will not let the program install internet explorer 5. if you install the program before updating your computer it installs internet explorer 5 and runs perfectly fine even after updating!

    Thank you for this info. It looks like this means microsoft could make Picture IT work by fixing this problem. Why don't they do it?
