Microsoft Picture It incompatability with Windows 7 and alternatives for .mix files.

I have been using Microsoft Picture It for years to design tons of graphics for my business and now I have purchased a new pc loaded with Windows 7 and find that my true love Picture It! is not compatable.  I never dreamed this would be the case for a software that isn't even a decade old or that new pc I just spent thousands on would be sitting right back at the store it came from.  I really feel that Microsoft has cheated me out of something I paid for and invested so much work in by making it unusable and it has brought my small business to a standstill.  What other program is available that is compatable with Windows 7 that will allow me to edit and view existing .mix and other Picture It! format files and contain all the capabilities of Picture It?  I would be willing to purchase additional software from Microsoft to make Picture It compatable to Windows 7 if necessary.

Hello all,

I know that you are all disappointed that Microsoft Picture It is not compatible with Windows 7. 

Your feedback would be better heard if you send it to the Windows 7 Feedback site.

These are your options when software is not compatible:

If the program is not compatible, then you may try to install and run the program in compatibility mode.

Use the following steps:

1)      Right click on the Program

2)      Click on Properties

3)      Click on Compatibility tab

4)      Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows XP, Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully.

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player

(www.vmware.com) or any other 3party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Hi twetter 10, Many complain that Microsoft are not listening anymore to complaints regarding running Picture It 2000 on Windows 7 computers, probably Microsoft subject replys have been closed now as their solution of running in compatibility xp mode does i have found allow PI 2000 to run on Windows 7 ok (except for the playing of the many help videos, the videos require a download of Macromedia Shockwave which is not available for download anymore).

    I have installed Picture it 2000 on two Windows 7 computers, a Sony Valio F23S1E and a Dell Vostro 1320. Picture It is a really great item of software especially when you consider it was intended to run on Windows 98 computers!, i have another Microsoft item i love for its picture editing, Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006, it includes some of the features of Picture It 2000 but they do not work as well in my opinion.

    The above link has further information regarding why Picture It 2000 will not install on xp above Internet Explorer 5 (note ie 6 ive found allows Pictue it to install also)

    Hi!, I reinstalled Microsoft picture It 2000 on my Acer laptop with XP Home Edition by removing internet explorer 8 (service pack 2) via add remove program then downloaded ie6 in its place.

    The Picture It cd then installed ok

    Now its a matter of removing IE6 and reinstalling IE8 again!

    It all takes some time because all the many Microsoft monthly updates for IE 8 (lost when program removed) will now start downloading again!!!.

    Note if you have IE 8 Service Pack 3 installed it may not be possible to delete IE8 via add remove!.

    I purchased Microsoft PictureIt, version 4 some years ago, and then version 7.  I purchased version 10, then Microsoft Digital Image Suite.  I still use 7 and rarely use the other ones.  They are simply not as good or easy to use.

    I have a Dell Studio XPS 8300 desktop and I just loaded it straight in like my other software.  I use Windows  7  Professional and my Internet Explorer is version 9.  I am having no problems.  It opens all my old photos in MIX format as well as my photos in JPEG and other formats.

    Up until a year and a half ago it was loaded on a Gateway machine with Windows XP and it worked fine on that also.  I got rid of my old machine, so I deleted it and put it on my new Dell.

    Here's one problem I found long time ago.  I also have Printmaster.  Remember the verse "never the twain shall meet"?  Whan another program you load uses a different version of twain, you will have to load the one that doesn't work again.  Some programs won't work if it overwrites the twain with a different version.  I found this out when I had XP.  Just reload and it will overwrite the new one.  Reloading it will make it work when you get the correct version of twain.  This is the only problem I have found so far.

    I'm not understanding why so many people are having problems with this software.  The only thing I can think of is the combination of the machine programming and the installation program not being compatible.  Tell us what you know, Microsoft?  Why is this program working on my computer and not on theirs?
