Disable caps lock key

I have done web searches on how to disable that pesky caps lock key, but I thought you guys might provide safer answers. I am reasonably proficient with computers, but my fat fingers keeps hitting the CAPS LOCK KEY AND THEN EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE THIS UNTIL I REALIZE IT AND GO BACK AND re-type it. I do it a lot and it is driving me nuts! Help please!

I understand that you found some suggestions about registry edition - they are not so bad. If you don't want to download any files which allow you to disable CAPS LOCK, you can create it by your own:

  1. Press WinKey+R > type notepad and press Enter
  2. Paste to the notepad this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]

"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00 3. File > Save As... 

- Select for **Save as type: All Files**
- Enter in the **File name** field: **disable\_caps\_lock.reg**
- Click **Save**
  1. Right click on the created file > Merge
  2. Restart your system

In the case that you want to enable CAPS LOCK again, you need to delete that registry entry, so you need follow these steps:

  1. Press WinKey+R > type regedit and press Enter
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
  3. Right click on the Scancode Map > Delete
  4. Restart your system

I guess it might be the only way to disable CAPS LOCK.

In the case that you still don't want to do that, Windows 7 is offering something different than disabling CAPS LOCK. You can enable Toggle Keys, so you are going to hear a tone when you press CAPS LOCK. To do this follow these steps:

  1. Press Start > Control Panel > Easy of Access   > Easy of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use
  2. Mark the Turn on Toggle Keys checkbox

    Mate ... I *am* running the anniversary upgrade. --  v 1607 Build 14393.222.  I've had 1607 installed since the day it was made available in what ... July?  August?  I was running Win10 Home then; and installing the reg tweak *and rebooting* saw it take hold.  And when I upgraded in-place to Win10 Pro, the tweak was not removed or disabled.  Still happily running CAPS LOCK-free.

    There is no logical reason, and no change report indicating, that MS removed or altered Windows 10's reading and use of this keyboard tweak, a tweak that has been working since Windows 95.  I can find a few posts with Win10 owners complaining they can't do the remap, and for many this was resolved by changing their user account changed to an admin account (which is not the same as running under the Administrator account).   And FWIW, I totally disable UAC on my machine. 

    [Wild Thoughts:]  I suppose it is possible, if you're using a non-standard keyboard driver (like Razer) that it is now overriding what has been set in the registry.  Or perhaps you're using a driver whose options give the ability to set Caps Lock on or off, and it is currently set to on.  I also seem to recall SetPoint for Logitech keyboards used to offer this as an option, but it has been quite a while since I used SetPoint so I may be imagining that. 

    So ... if its not the driver software do you see the registry tweak entry in the registry under the proper key, exactly and precisely as I showed in my photo with the last post?   If not, you don't have sufficient rights or your .reg file is incorrect.  If you do see it, and it is precisely and exactly as shown, then reboot a couple of times. 

    One way to test if the Windows-sees-the-reg-tweak aspect of this is working BTW, is to go to Settings > Keyboard and under "Toggle Keys", turn on "Hear a tone when you press Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock".  Then turn up your volume and press each of these keys; you'll hear the tone w/scroll and num locks, but no tone with caps lock.  At least that's how my box is behaving.

    I'm not sure what part of 'no longer works' you did not understand.

    This should imply to you that I have had the reg patch installed since i got windows 10.

    After the ANNIVERSARY UPGRADE, it no longer worked. The reg entry was NOT removed or reset  by the New Version of Windows 10,  Windows Anniversary does not seem to LOOK at that reg entry anymore.

    Let us know how it goes after the  Anniversary upgrade trickles down to you,

    Sure it does. 

    I had it running on Win10 home w/all updates, and I have it running now on Win10 Pro.

    Make sure the text file you're saving in notepad is not saving in one of the Unicode formats -- select ANSI in the Encoding dropdown on Save As.   When done the entry will look like this in the registry.  It takes effect after rebooting.
