If your computer is having problems playing sound, try using the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems with your volume settings, your sound card or driver, and your speakers or headphones.

To open the Playing Audio troubleshooter:

1.       Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2.        In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.

3.       Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio playback.

4.       Follow the instructions in the troubleshooter.

    I tried the "troubleshooter" and it must be loaded with blanks.  It found no trouble and suggested that I check here. This got me in the loop where I have been ... until I find my old XP disk. It seems like for $120, we ought to get a little more help.

    It seems that I have digitized output to an analog speaker and the sound is going out an optical port???  Where oh where is my little analog jack go?

    I have the same problem I did the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 & now my speakers do not work :(  Tech support for my computer (in the instructions microsoft instructs us to call them) sent me drivers which one took 1/2 hr to download & it will not unzip!  I always listen to music while on my computer so this is really bumming me out.  I can plug them into the front of my tower thru the headphone connection 1 connection option only, but that isn't how they are designed to connect as there are 3 connections for my speakers.  Also when going through the front... the surround does not work... ugh!!!  The tech support guy from India (a whole other issue in itself!) told me well at least you have the option to connect in the front... no matter what I said I could not get him to understand my speakers need to be plugged into the back... I should not have to settle for inferior performance from my computer I just bought in August '09.  Nor should anyone for that matter!

    Everything I have read online about windows 7 is to not do the upgrade & to do the clean install instead (well this is pretty much over my head that's for sure)

    Dell XPS 600 X-Fi Xtreme Music Card

    No sound. Win7 didn't find any usable drivers, Creative drivers don't work, Realtek AC'97 doesn't work. :<

    These moderators have no idea what they are talking about, use the troubleshooter what a joke. A new feature that doesn't work just like every other feature. I mean really has any Windows OS ever found you the correct driver. Or did system restore ever restore your computer everytime. Have you seen the new one. Let windows get your hardware working with another OS that it worked on before. Ive tried it all it just gives you false hope then it lets you down when it says sorry can't do that or can't find that. We are all going to have to wait and deal with this until they i mean we find all the bugs so they can fix them haven't we all learned already from Vista, i guess not. We pay big money to be Beta testers when this should of all been resolved when they had the real beta out. But Billy boy needs some more cash cause Steve Jobs is closing in fast.
