If your computer is having problems playing sound, try using the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems with your volume settings, your sound card or driver, and your speakers or headphones.

To open the Playing Audio troubleshooter:

1.       Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2.        In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting.

3.       Under Hardware and Sound, click Troubleshoot audio playback.

4.       Follow the instructions in the troubleshooter.

    Dell XPS 600 X-Fi Xtreme Music Card

    No sound. Win7 didn't find any usable drivers, Creative drivers don't work, Realtek AC'97 doesn't work. :<

    I had this same problem and after doing some hard research, several hours later.. trying to go to my manufactor and trying to install old drivers from my old xp, and vista cd's and no luck, I simply went to cnet's websited for download and searched: 

    SigmaTel4487.exe - SigmaTel Audio Driver Version: 5.10.4487

    Installed it and just like that, my speakers were once again recognized and I I saw them plugged in, I was on the verge of buying a new sound card since my current configuration is a sound card intergrated with my motherboad.  I actually bought one of the ebay USB sound cards for $4 as a last resort, too bad I wont get to use it anymore and I already wrote those few dollars off as a lost cause and I have not even receive the usb card.  Ohh well, you live an learn.  This was the only issue I had with windows 7, the no sound problem.  Other than that, my experience has been great and I will still recommend it.  I hope this helps some of you out there, enjoy!

    I have been trying for three days to correct this. I am getting tired of this loop and no answers. The sire reccomended by Chavez is not working. I got no disk with my laptop for vista or I would reload. I loaded the 32 bit version into my Toshiba with no problem, then the 64 bit into my new HP lost the sound.

    I know I am one of many people with this problem, why no answers yet??????

    I have the same problem I did the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 & now my speakers do not work :(  Tech support for my computer (in the instructions microsoft instructs us to call them) sent me drivers which one took 1/2 hr to download & it will not unzip!  I always listen to music while on my computer so this is really bumming me out.  I can plug them into the front of my tower thru the headphone connection 1 connection option only, but that isn't how they are designed to connect as there are 3 connections for my speakers.  Also when going through the front... the surround does not work... ugh!!!  The tech support guy from India (a whole other issue in itself!) told me well at least you have the option to connect in the front... no matter what I said I could not get him to understand my speakers need to be plugged into the back... I should not have to settle for inferior performance from my computer I just bought in August '09.  Nor should anyone for that matter!

    Everything I have read online about windows 7 is to not do the upgrade & to do the clean install instead (well this is pretty much over my head that's for sure)
