Configuration error setting up Xbox 360 as media extender with Windows 7 media PC

Currently running Windows 7 x32.

Until recent update to XBox 360, all was working fine using 360 as a media centre extender.

Now fails and when I try to resestablish a connection a configuration error arises.

Network connection seems fine as I can still stream media fine to Xbox dashboard.  Media centre seems to find and install extender OK, just fails at configuration.

Have tried with AV and fiewalls disabled (Karspersky) with no success. 

Frustrating as was working fine, now the functionaility is lost.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated

For months, I experienced a problem exactly like the one described here, but I've finally fixed it on my machine and I believe I've got to the core of it.

The fix (this is for Windows 7, may also apply to Vista):

  1. Find your 'Users' folder (usually c:\users).
  2. Under 'Users' folder, go to subdirectory 'Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live'.

Note: The directory may not exist, but I've seen the extender problem only on a computer that does have it.

  1. Inside this directory, there are additional subdirectories (e.g. 'Bici' and 'SqmApi'). Inside, there are several files with .sqm extension. THE PROBLEM IS WITH .SQM FILE PERMISSIONS. Specifically, the profile service has no permission to access or copy the files when creating a new profile.
  2. To fix the permission issue, perform the following actions on each of SQM files.

Note: Inheriting parent container permissions will grant Everyone read access to the files.

a. Right click on the file, select Properties.

b. Select Security tab, click on Advanced button

c. Select Permissions tab (selected by default), click on Change Permissions... button.

d. MARK THE CHECKBOX: Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent.

e. Press OK button several times to close all the dialogs.

Then, setup Media Center Extender per regular instructions.

While these steps successfully repaired my computer, they may not apply to every situation. My advice is to run the following diagnostics steps:

  1. Use Control Panel to create a new user account.
  2. Use 'Switch user' (or Log off/Log on) in an attempt to log into this new account. This attempt will fail (if not, you may have a different problem).
  3. Examine 'Application' event log (under 'Windows Logs') for the relevant events.

On my machine, I've got several warnings with Event Id 1509 about the files that couldn't be copied from Users\Default to Users\TEMP due to access denied errors. These were .sqm files with incorrect permissions.

    The certificate is not trusted. It specifically states in the certificate that it must be added to the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" store. This creates a dilemma.

    If I cleanse both the PC and 360 and start a new setup, it will create a new certificate, however, it is not trusted and therefore does not continue the setup. It generates both these events:

    Event 544

    Media Center Extender Setup cannot exchange certificates with the Extender with ID: uuid:10000000-0000-0000-0200-00125AB41E6F.

    Error: The owner SID on a per-user subscription doesn't exist

    Event 545

    Media Center Extender Setup cannot create an account for the Extender with ID: uuid:10000000-0000-0000-0200-00125AB41E6F.

    Error: Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed.

    I can import the certificate to the "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" store and attempt to run setup again, however, it still does not work but it will only generate event 545.

    Any attempt at running setup again after that, it will generate both events again. It seems that in the initial install of the certificate it needs to install it correctly in the trusted roots store. This is further than I've been in the past few months and this is extremely frustrating. Media streaming works fine and I can access all my content through that method. The PC and 360 communicate fine except when I try to use media center. These certificate errors are generated and it is also unable to create the mcx1 account. I've tried everything including disabling all firewalls and even creating the mcx1 account. It will just try to create a mcx2 account.

    Amazing isn't it? MS creates both products and despite hundreds of recorded requests for help with this issue, they still can't/won't provide a solution. What's worse, now they're screwing Blockbuster because having this setup working would mean people could rent movies without having to leave home (many Netflix doesn't have because they're new releases).

    I'm a domain admin and have been since the days of NT and I've scoured the web for a solution. All my machines at home are on a domain (with the exception of this laptop that I've pulled off now after reading somehalf-@55 explanation of how a machine on a domain "will have trouble" (or something like that). Why can't they just list the requirements so we can do what they won't (troubleshoot and resolve the problem).

    I've got things filtered down the 545 error also. No firewalls, no routers (switches), no UAC, using "run as administrator", rebooted, ensured media sharing is enabled......

    Can you please post a description of your issue in a new thread? It is difficult

    to tell what your problem is or even try to help. Blockbuster isn't available on

    Media Center/Media Center Extenders if that is what you are looking to do.

    Barb,

    I have been able to add my white Xbox 360 (not Elite, not Slim) as an extender to my PC without an issue.  I upgraded to Windows 7 and again, no problem.  When I traded my Xbox for a brand new Slim, I could not add it.  No online solution worked.  I would have to say I have completely botched up all the settings on Win7 trying to get them to pair.

    Now dig this:  I recently built an HTPC and installed another copy of Win7 (Home Premium 64 bit on both machines) and it paired just fine.  I would HATE to think that I would have to wipe my hard drive on my desktop and do a fresh install, but if there is no solution forthcoming, I will do that.

    Imagine if you lost something in your house and you KNEW it was in there and could never find it.  And someone told you the only solution was to take EVERYTHING outside, take everything APART and reassemble each piece as you brought it back into your house.  How willing would you be to find that lost object?
