Configuration error setting up Xbox 360 as media extender with Windows 7 media PC

Currently running Windows 7 x32.

Until recent update to XBox 360, all was working fine using 360 as a media centre extender.

Now fails and when I try to resestablish a connection a configuration error arises.

Network connection seems fine as I can still stream media fine to Xbox dashboard.  Media centre seems to find and install extender OK, just fails at configuration.

Have tried with AV and fiewalls disabled (Karspersky) with no success.

Frustrating as was working fine, now the functionaility is lost.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated

For months, I experienced a problem exactly like the one described here, but I've finally fixed it on my machine and I believe I've got to the core of it.

The fix (this is for Windows 7, may also apply to Vista):

  1. Find your 'Users' folder (usually c:\users).
  2. Under 'Users' folder, go to subdirectory 'Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live'.

Note: The directory may not exist, but I've seen the extender problem only on a computer that does have it.

  1. Inside this directory, there are additional subdirectories (e.g. 'Bici' and 'SqmApi'). Inside, there are several files with .sqm extension. THE PROBLEM IS WITH .SQM FILE PERMISSIONS. Specifically, the profile service has no permission to access or copy the files when creating a new profile.
  2. To fix the permission issue, perform the following actions on each of SQM files.

Note: Inheriting parent container permissions will grant Everyone read access to the files.

a. Right click on the file, select Properties.

b. Select Security tab, click on Advanced button

c. Select Permissions tab (selected by default), click on Change Permissions... button.

d. MARK THE CHECKBOX: Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent.

e. Press OK button several times to close all the dialogs.

Then, setup Media Center Extender per regular instructions.

While these steps successfully repaired my computer, they may not apply to every situation. My advice is to run the following diagnostics steps:

  1. Use Control Panel to create a new user account.
  2. Use 'Switch user' (or Log off/Log on) in an attempt to log into this new account. This attempt will fail (if not, you may have a different problem).
  3. Examine 'Application' event log (under 'Windows Logs') for the relevant events.

On my machine, I've got several warnings with Event Id 1509 about the files that couldn't be copied from Users\Default to Users\TEMP due to access denied errors. These were .sqm files with incorrect permissions.

what firewall? if it is windows, it should be left enabled.

    • as mentioned several times in my description, Windows firewall, and it is enabled.

    uninstall your Avast AV

    • I don't have Avast AV. I have AVG. Which has been uninstalled when I reinstalled Windows. I have already tested with this disabled. AVG is not the problem.

remove the associated PC from both Media Center and the Xbox dashboard

    • as mentioned above, all of this has been done several times. Besides, that's not how it works anyway.

    reboot.

    set up the extender again

    what happens?

    • all of this has been answered in my original post. You may note I even reinstalled Windows 7.

Barb, I appreciate you are a volunteer, but please read my original post in more detail before asking questions I have already answered. I respected your frustration at previous posters and provided all the detail I could think of. The least you can do is read it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    there are other volunteers at

    http://experts.windows.com/frms/windows_entertainment_and_connected_home/f/114.aspx

    who might assist you.

I suspect a network related issue, and I would ask you to connect the pc to the

xbox directly and bypass the network and make sure there is no nic teaming,

etc., but you'd probably respond that you've tried it already.

    Best of luck.

but you'd probably respond that you've tried it already.

Really Barb? I know this thread has gone on for years for you, and it must be very frustrating trying to support a product which has such pointlessly painful problems, but does that mean I deserve to cop that attitude from you? I feel quite sure that being a volunteer does not preclude you from reserving a professional approach on here.

If you think you are justified because of what I said in my previous message, then think again. There is nothing wrong with me expecting you to have actually read the information I provided before you start troubleshooting my problem. Especially when you ask repeatedly throughout the thread for event logs and detailed descriptions etc from other people, and I actually do it without being asked. As the person needing help, I did my part properly for you, and it is not unreasonable for me to expect you to do yours properly for me. Your first response to me only added to my already heightened frustration, because it showed a lack of attention to/caring about the problem I presented. I had put at least four days of work into the issue before I posted on here, and even reinstalled Windows. Don't you think I would already be highly frustrated before I got here?

For the record, no I hadn't done that already, and I appreciate the tip. (If I had done it already I would have listed it along with all the other thorough detail I provided for you.)

Moving right along, I have good news though. I think I have found the other half of my solution - I removed my Win7 PC from the homegroup this morning, just to see what would happen, and now the Xbox has stopped disconnecting.

Hopefully this (and all my detail above) will help someone else solve the same issue. I will post again if anything else pops up, but at this stage I think my issue is sorted.

im getting sick of this ****

should have stuck with playstation at least it works... not to mention BETTER graphics

i tried what you said and now its more **** up then before

during the extender setup now it doesnt get past the first **** step

YOUR attempt at helping screwed it up more THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

before i looked into help i at least made it to the 3rd step on the setup window but now not even the 1st... great job

anyway after your "HELP" i went backwards

now media center cant find the extender when i try to do the setup

its not my firewall, internet or anything causing the problem

as far as i can work it out the problem consists of 2 things

    1. **** support
    2. **** console manufacturers

i never had any problems connecting a ps3 to a pc thru media center so in conclusion

    XBOX IS **** UP
