Configuration error setting up Xbox 360 as media extender with Windows 7 media PC

Currently running Windows 7 x32.

Until recent update to XBox 360, all was working fine using 360 as a media centre extender.

Now fails and when I try to resestablish a connection a configuration error arises.

Network connection seems fine as I can still stream media fine to Xbox dashboard. Media centre seems to find and install extender OK, just fails at configuration.

Have tried with AV and fiewalls disabled (Karspersky) with no success.

Frustrating as was working fine, now the functionaility is lost.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated

For months, I experienced a problem exactly like the one described here, but I've finally fixed it on my machine and I believe I've got to the core of it.

The fix (this is for Windows 7, may also apply to Vista):

Find your 'Users' folder (usually c:\users).
Under 'Users' folder, go to subdirectory 'Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live'.

Note: The directory may not exist, but I've seen the extender problem only on a computer that does have it.

Inside this directory, there are additional subdirectories (e.g. 'Bici' and 'SqmApi'). Inside, there are several files with .sqm extension. THE PROBLEM IS WITH .SQM FILE PERMISSIONS. Specifically, the profile service has no permission to access or copy the files when creating a new profile.
To fix the permission issue, perform the following actions on each of SQM files.

Note: Inheriting parent container permissions will grant Everyone read access to the files.

a. Right click on the file, select Properties.

b. Select Security tab, click on Advanced button

c. Select Permissions tab (selected by default), click on Change Permissions... button.

d. MARK THE CHECKBOX: Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent.

e. Press OK button several times to close all the dialogs.

Then, setup Media Center Extender per regular instructions.

While these steps successfully repaired my computer, they may not apply to every situation. My advice is to run the following diagnostics steps:

Use Control Panel to create a new user account.
Use 'Switch user' (or Log off/Log on) in an attempt to log into this new account. This attempt will fail (if not, you may have a different problem).
Examine 'Application' event log (under 'Windows Logs') for the relevant events.

On my machine, I've got several warnings with Event Id 1509 about the files that couldn't be copied from Users\Default to Users\TEMP due to access denied errors. These were .sqm files with incorrect permissions.

1. What is the exact configuration error message?
If you're receiving Error: Session Terminated, then try the following steps to fix the issue.
1. Click Start.
2. In the Search programs and files box, type event viewer. When Event Viewer appears in the search list, click it.
3. Click the arrow to the left of Applications and Services Logs, and then click Media Center.
4. Find any event where Error appears under Type and where Media Remote Manager appears under Source.
5. Double-click each item that satisfies these two conditions to view the description of the event. Look for a description that is similar to the following: Unauthorized window was detected while running the Media Center Experience, with file name 'C:\PROGRA~1........
6. Remove or disable the notification service for the application that is listed under Description. For more information about how to remove or disable the notification service for the application, see the manual for the application, or contact the manufacturer of the application.
7. Try to connect your console to your computer again.

The Exact Error Message in media centre is: "An error was encountered while configuring your computer for use with this Extender"

The event viewer shows the following errors:

"Media Center Extender Setup cannot exchange certificates with the Extender with ID: uuid:10000000-0000-0000-0200-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Error: The owner SID on a per-user subscription doesn't exist"

and

"Media Center Extender Setup cannot create an account for the Extender with ID: uuid:10000000-0000-0000-0200-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Error: Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed."

Not the same error as noted above, but might be helpful?

Hi,

Try the following steps and check the result.

Remove the Media Center Extender certificate. To remove the certificate, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type mmc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
1. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
2. Click Certificates, and then click Add.
3. Select Computer account, and then click Next.
4. Select Local computer, and then click Finish.
5. Click OK.
6. In the Navigation Pane under Console Root, expand Certificates, expand Personal, and then click Certificates.
7. Right-click Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host, and then click Delete.
8. After you remove the certificate, uninstall the Extender, and then restart the Extender setup.
