Configuration error setting up Xbox 360 as media extender with Windows 7 media PC

Currently running Windows 7 x32.

Until recent update to XBox 360, all was working fine using 360 as a media centre extender.

Now fails and when I try to resestablish a connection a configuration error arises.

Network connection seems fine as I can still stream media fine to Xbox dashboard.  Media centre seems to find and install extender OK, just fails at configuration.

Have tried with AV and fiewalls disabled (Karspersky) with no success. 

Frustrating as was working fine, now the functionaility is lost.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated

For months, I experienced a problem exactly like the one described here, but I've finally fixed it on my machine and I believe I've got to the core of it.

The fix (this is for Windows 7, may also apply to Vista):

  1. Find your 'Users' folder (usually c:\users).
  2. Under 'Users' folder, go to subdirectory 'Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live'.

Note: The directory may not exist, but I've seen the extender problem only on a computer that does have it.

  1. Inside this directory, there are additional subdirectories (e.g. 'Bici' and 'SqmApi'). Inside, there are several files with .sqm extension. THE PROBLEM IS WITH .SQM FILE PERMISSIONS. Specifically, the profile service has no permission to access or copy the files when creating a new profile.
  2. To fix the permission issue, perform the following actions on each of SQM files.

Note: Inheriting parent container permissions will grant Everyone read access to the files.

a. Right click on the file, select Properties.

b. Select Security tab, click on Advanced button

c. Select Permissions tab (selected by default), click on Change Permissions... button.

d. MARK THE CHECKBOX: Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent.

e. Press OK button several times to close all the dialogs.

Then, setup Media Center Extender per regular instructions.

While these steps successfully repaired my computer, they may not apply to every situation. My advice is to run the following diagnostics steps:

  1. Use Control Panel to create a new user account.
  2. Use 'Switch user' (or Log off/Log on) in an attempt to log into this new account. This attempt will fail (if not, you may have a different problem).
  3. Examine 'Application' event log (under 'Windows Logs') for the relevant events.

On my machine, I've got several warnings with Event Id 1509 about the files that couldn't be copied from Users\Default to Users\TEMP due to access denied errors. These were .sqm files with incorrect permissions.

    what firewall? if it is windows, it should be left enabled.

    uninstall your Avast AV

    remove the associated PC from both Media Center and the Xbox dashboard

    reboot.

    set up the extender again

    what happens?

    FULL DETAILS OF PROBLEM OUTLINED BELOW:

    I am having a similar problem  to those described before me in this thread. Except in my case everything worked beautifully for a full two years and then suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. Nothing was changed on the PC without my knowledge, same goes for the xbox 360.

    I have tried all the suggestions so far, several times each, and have completely dumped my old pc set up and freshly installed Windows 7 Home Edition as well.

    After the fresh install I was able to establish a connection briefly, but 15mins later, the XBox disconnected and reconnection has not been established. The event log says at that time, Warning: Session Enforcement. "The Media Center Extender user was abruptly disconnected." Event viewer for this is as follows:

    Other points:

    • My whole network is wired.
    • The Xbox appears in the network map, with MAC address and IPv4 Address visible.
    • Running a network test on the Xbox works (it shows it as connected to the network), but connection test to WMC fails.
    • I have deleted the certificate several times but this does not help
    • Media Extenders have been allowed through Windows Firewall. However this periodically reverts itself to blocked... (WTH??!!)
    • Network List Service is running and automatic.
    • Media Center Extender Service is running and automatic (although occasionally it seems to randomly turn itself off... WTH??!!)
    • UPnP device host service is running and automatic
    • I have tried disabling firewall and AVG and it made no difference.
    • I don't have that Trusteer software others have mentioned
    • I don't have the sqm permission issue
    • Connection to Xbox live works
    • I have tried resetting the network settings on the xbox to factory defaults - all automatic allocation of IP etc. This made no difference.
    • XBox360 is allowed in Media streaming options.
    • I don't have fingerprint software

    Like many others before me, I have decades of tech knowledge and have researched far and wide and tried all sorts of suggestions with no luck.

    NB: I think I have partially solved this, but unfortunately it's not a complete fix. I have managed to establish a connection with the XBox 360 Media Extender but it keeps disconnecting after a few minutes (event viewer says "The Media Center Extender user was abruptly disconnected."). After this happens I can re-establish a connection, but it will wait a few minutes and then re-disconnect as above.

    To at least get it this far, I have gone into Windows Firewall (Advanced Settings) and enabled and allowed all rules relating to the Media Center Extender, both inbound and outbound. Then I tried adding the extender again and it worked, with its limitations as outlined in the first paragraph.

    So, partial solution- All Advanced Firewall rules relating to Media Extender (inbound and outbound) have to be enabled and allowed.

    But please, how do I now stop the constant disconnections?

    Well I finally got it working not sure what really fixed it but since people kept saying it was either a reg fix or a certificate problemI scoured how to fix those.

    Eventually I just downloaded a program call CCLEANER and ran it had it fix everything it thought was wrong the rebooted and now everything is working again. or so it seems.

    this may not have been the fix but now everything is running again so im not complaining.

    ok it seemed to help but now i dont get whats wrong. The xbox installs hooks up and works until you turn it off once then next turn on doesnt work again :(

    what could be causing this I have checked every connection, network traffic and settings but you can only do the setup and then once you turn off the xbox it cant reconnect. i have even tried different xboxs.

    someone must have the answer or some advice please help.

    Can any of you help me?  I experienced the same "Configuration Error" as is mentioned in this thread.  I followed both steps on this link:   http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/911123 and still cannot REconnect my Xbox to my Windows 7 (Home Premium) PC.  I tried every troubleshooting trick I know and I've looked up even more.  I've turned off all firewall and anti-virus software.  I even rolled back windows updates to before the time when this stopped working.  What troubles me the most is it was working just over a week ago, just fine and all of a sudden it won't connect and when I went through the whole process to disconnect the xbox from the pc and reset it up I get the darn configuration error.  Please help me if you can.
