Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->

Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

I have a Windows 7 laptop with this issue and none of the proposed solutions has solved the problem.  Are there any other solutions that might be applicable.

I tried a hundred complicated fixes for this that didnt work, try this.

It was a problem with the Realtek on board LAN connection (unused) drivers. I uninstalled it in Device manager and reinstalled it and that fixed the icons. Not sure how it was interfering with a different connection but I'm glad to be over it.

The solution suggested by gk2010 above (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/clean-up-past-notification-icons-in-windows-vista/) appears to be the most appropriate one. If it doesn't work then could well be a problem with your driver!

Same problem here. Was a fresh Windows 7 64 bit, all updates, current drivers. (No Bluetooth, no network bridge, no anti virus software, no personal firewall, only one network connection.) None of the above solutions has changed anything. This has already cost me five hours. Has anybody a real solution for this? Except re-installing completely?

Just to confirm, "Local Area Connection" is the only thing listed? No "Incoming Connections?"
