Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    It took a matter of hours but I found an alternative solution. I am running an HP dm4 with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. I had the red x instead of wireless bars.****My steps are as follows:

    1. In the start menu search box, type device manager. Press ENTER.
    2. Find your wireless card under the NETWORK heading. Right click it and press uninstall.
    3. Restart your PC.
    4. Your computer should re-install the driver automatically. If not, open device manager again. Press action, search for new hardware.

    i came to this page looking for an answer to the same issue. none of this worked. though it did not take me too long to figure it was because i had a bridged network that was not in use .. i deleted it and the X is gone..

    1: open control panel--> Network & sharing centre.

    2: Under (view your active networks) tab,  Click on (home) icon, A window will appear.

    3: At bottom click (Merge or delete network locations).

    4: Delete all networks exept that one which is in use. Close & ok.

    Thank you, but this didn't work.

    First of all, I'm using Windows 7X64 and have no "View Your Active Network" tab, nor anything that even resembles it in Network and Sharing Center.

    Second I do not have a "home" icon, nor anything that resembles it.

    Finally, I am able to delete all networks except the one that is in use; however, that does not fix the problem.

    Thank you for your attempt though. I'm hoping someone actually has an answer to fix this problem.
