Network icon wrong when connected with Windows 7

I installed Windows 7 64 bit yesterday.  The installation went well, but when I am connected to the internet, the network icon on the taskbar says that I am not connected (has a red X through it).  When I click on the icon, it shows the correct network and shows that I am connected.

I tried to delete the connection and then reconnect but it still reads incorrectly.

Can anyone help?

You may try the steps as below and check if the issue gets fixed,

Now try to access the program in safe mode with networking.

Follow this below provided link to start your computer in safemode with networking.

If not able to access the program in safemode with networking then you need to assign  permission because of incorrect Permission settings OR Windows WMI Control services is not functioning properly.

Inorder to troubleshoot this you need to follow the steps provided below.

1.      Right Click on Computer -> Manage

2.      Under the System Tools section, double click on Local Users and Groups

3.      Click Groups -> Right Click on Administrators -> Add to group -> Add -> Advanced -> Find now ->  

         Double Click on Local Service -> Click Ok

4.      Close all the windows reboot the computer and check the status

Note you need to disable the security software present on your computer and check for the issue.

 Because at times the security software might also cause these type of issues.

Also note you have to enable the security software on your computer after performing the troubleshooting steps.

If the above provided step doesn’t resolve the issue then you need to update your network adapter drivers on your computer and check for the issue.

    I too have the same issue with my network adapter it says I am not connected in the task bar with the red ''X" showing on my connection icon....this happened when I received an update yesterday for my adapter see below

    Installation status: Successful

    Update type: Optional

    Realtek Network software update released in June, 2011

     this error did not incur til I receieved the update so it would be obvious that I need to uninstall the update and would like to hear from your learned colleagues on this as I have never had an issue with updates so far with 131 installed to date.

    The post marked as "answer" makes a terrible recommendation! LocalService should never be made a member of the Administrators group.   LocalService is a specific principal account with limited access, particularly network access.  LocalService has no access to network connections by design (to be pedantic, it can instantiate a network object, but it has context in which to make an actual network connection). 

    Making LocalService an administrator would give full access to your system from any service running as LocalService, and would be a great escalation method.  It would also pave the way for an attacker to access other systems over the network.

    Bad, bad, bad advice.

    I had the same problem go onto control panel network and internet and click network and sharing and on the left click change adapter setting

    then if you have a network bridge disable it and delete it

    This problem is VERY annoying. Actually, it does do something. If you play games that are multiplayer and use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), eg. Hamachi, you might find that it stops your friend from connecting through the network, i have not found a fix yet to this problem but hopefully system restore will work.
