Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

Hi everybody,

while Microsoft does not fix this problem (...and I have not heard anything that they are doing so), I am using "ACDSee Photo Manager 2009" -"The easy way to organize and share your photos". Download the program and use this program to organize your pictures and then put them back in to your picture file. It´s the only solution I have found to be able to continue working, once W7 does not function properly.

My comment and "solution" should be a shame for Microsoft, who, in their answers, just tells us what we already know: It doesnt work! It should be a shame for Microsoft that customers need to suggest someone elses program to be able to handle a stupid little problem, that should be easy to fix.

I think I've found a solution that may work for some...using Windows XP Mode in Windows 7. I'm not positive, but you may need Windows 7 Professional to be able to download and install Windows XP Mode. Windows Virtual PC was also required. I have Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit. I entered help on my laptop and typed in "Windows XP Mode" and I found instructions on what I needed to download and a link to where I could get it. Windows XP Mode was a 500 MB download but it was free. Windows Virtual PC was also free and only about 10 MB. Once installed, I was able to go into Windows XP Mode (which is basically a full functioning version of Windows XP running inside a window on Windows 7), open up My Computer, browse to the C drive link (C: drive is a virtual drive...you'll want to go to the "Other" section in My Computer and choose the appropriate "C on laptopname" drive), find your folder with the pictures in it and you'll be able to move pictures around manually just like you did in XP. It's a little bit cumbersome, but much easier than not having the functionality and much easier than transferring pictures to another computer to do it.

NOTE ON PREVIOUS POST: I accidentally "proposed as answer" on the previous post by Klaus, Brazil. I did not try his suggestion so I cannot confirm whether it worked or not.

We are in the same boat as photographers. Super frustrated with some (if not most) of Windows 7 features. For renaming, you may want to try ACDSee, that is a great renaming program that we use for weddings. Good luck!
