Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Hi rustyredhead,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    Thanks for that, will give it a go, one problem is that are almost 8000 pics to organise

    Talk about making Computing more complex who in what mined made this stupid error and in a well known program!

    Makes you wonder weather these deliberate mistakes are made to make you move on to the next insane OS were things aren't simple anymore! boo

    Please answer this question MS why are U taking away user control?????

    I loved Windows 7 but this option removed means I have to rename all the files about 1mill or so if you count all the stored photos and docs!...    just to get them in the order I wont this is no good for buisness people think of the hrs lost over sorting files no wonder buisnesses wont move from XP! lol
