Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    Where is drag and drop gone I can't rerange my pic's within a folder. What idiot did this The more I use win 7 the more stupid problems I discover Wake up Microsoft I wnat this fixedimmediately.

    We still have DOS prompts because they serve a purpose. And so it is with flexible files and folders. If I'm writing or working with video or audio, I have countless things in progress. I alphabetize all that is finished and pile the work in progress in a corner. This is the only logical way to keep track of what needs to be done.

    The idea of someone deciding how I must arrange things is rather baffling. I have two more weeks left to try out my computer running Windows 7. If Microsoft doesn't give me the ability to once again drag files and folders, I cannot work with a Windows computer. I must return it and look elsewhere.

    I understand changes from one OS to the next. I can see how little features come and disappear. It's a way for the marking folks to keep a company fresh and in the forefront. But doing away with logical and essential features is something out of an Orwell novel.

    In about two weeks, one of two things will happen: I will have a Windows update to fix the problem or there will be a Mac on this desk. The bottom line, after all, is that a computer is not a toy and I must get back to work.
