Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    I am totally disgusted by this MS support person's answer that one cannot manually rearrange pictures in the W7 OS and it is "by design".  Where have all those innovative MS OS designers gone?

    I just found is out this "improvement" today (3-4-11) after I bought my new Laptop.  It came with the W7 Home Premium.  If MS does not fix this I will reinstall my WXp OS in my laptop. 

    Besides this problem I also found that it is difficult to move files and folders manually (thru Edit in the Menu Bar) and to create new sub-folders.

    This is truly a huge problem!!  Do you hear us MS?  I need to be able to have the ability to move my photos around within a folder.  This may be the last straw that will help me decide upon a Mac.

    Perhaps everyone who reads this forum should complain direct to the Microsoft feed back site http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/execmail/feedback.mspx

    I have just upgraded my laptop from xp to windows 7 & have also found the same issue a nightmare and really frustrating i thought it was strange how cant click & drag your images. This is stupid how are you suppose to want to use the service if can organise it how you have benn used to. To me this seems a step back, wish i knew this before buying windows 7 Seems pointless downloading picys into folders if cant arrange them how you want them?

    Really hope theres a free download or something to get this changed its crazy you dont have control over your downloaded images
