Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    Microsoft. What possible benefit could removing the ability to drag and drop files in a desired order have? I dare you to give me a good reason. This is why Steve Jobs died an icon and Bill Gates will only be remembered as a thieving nerd. I'm moving to Mac. F this..

    This is really sticking it to image professionals, are the people at Windows complete idiots.  Fix this problem or this is my last Windows OS.

    Manually arranging photos in a folder by drag/drop...

    is not natively an option in Windows 7.

    The following article may be worth a look.
