Moving picture files around within a folder

When I try to drag and drop picture files within a folder to improve the order as I did with XP, the files return to their original location within the folder. How can I move pictures around within a folder?

Hi rustyredhead,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

You cannot manually rearrange the files/pictures by dragging within the folder in Windows 7. This change is by design in Windows 7. You can only uncheck the option to auto arrange icons on the desktop and can use it only on the desktop.

If you are referring to the Arrange by date, size, etc then you can still do that by simply Right clicking and selecting Sort by option in the drop down menu when inside the picture or file folder.

    I am sooopissed off - I will never use Windows again. Welcome Mac.

    I collect data from different people - such as photos and try to rearrange it in a single folder and no longer can do this with Windows 7.

    Who gave the idiot employee in Windows the authority to disable this function. They should be fired.

    Hi All,

    I realize that these comments were made almost a year ago. I have gone around and around on this subjust myself.

    My solution was this, I purchased ACDSee Photo Manager 2009 for $30.00 and now I reposition, then rename my photos with it.

    Then I can use my other software to edit the photos, etc.

    Why Windows removed this feature I will never know.

    I am also voting for this problem to be fixed, this was one of the most retarded decissions microsoft has ever made, do you guys realise how important that feature was for arranging photo collections?

    This may come across as a suprise to you Microsoft but .jpg  (pictures) are a pretty popular format nowday that people use, you may have heard of cameras which are used to take photos, well some of us need to arrange all the byproduct of cameras into sets and categorize them, it would help if you maybe kept with the times and made a an operating system that was able to function with photographs and images.
