VERY SERIOUS BUG/VULNERABILITY WIDCOMM BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE

Uninstalling Widcomm bluetooth software from control panel wipes out all data, programs and the boot sector on the computer.

I have tried to report this to microsoft but can't find out how. Please report this to the appropirate department.

I have windows 7 home premium. I tried to update my widcomm bluetooth software by downloading and installing the upgrade. The installation fails giving error 1935. After that the existing widcomm software becomes nonoperational. I tried to uninstall the widcomm bluetooth software from control panel the message "please wait while windows configures Bluetooth software". As it works all files from the hard drive are deleted, the desktop becomes empty, all open programs are deleted, all app data is deleted, the start menu becomes empty and finally it asks to reboot. After reboot the computer gives boot error message and does not boot up.

I had to install windows again to get the computer working. All data was lost. The anti virus was up to date and recent scans were all good. Windows was up to date. It appears that the error is from windows uninstaller some how going haywire when trying to remove widcomm bluetooth software. After restoring my computer I installed widcomm bluetooth software, copied the hard drive and tried to uninstall widcomm again. Results were exactly the same and I got screen shots from the beginning to the end. I have tried it on multiple computers with the same results (cloned the disk before)

Hi widcommbug,

yes, things are getting wild here...I don´t know why.

Maybe I can help you, here is what I did- and it worked:

  1. I´ve deinstalled all versions of widcomm bluetooth software with the windows program deinstallation in the system tools.
  2. I´ve restarted the PC
  3. I´ve cleaned up the registry with a tool (I do not rely on any, I´ve used registry mechanic, which is the same as Norton Utillities 14- but it works more or less)
  4. I´ve downloaded the latest version of widcomm bluethooth software here:

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f237/widcomm-bluetooth-driver-6-4-0-670-a-1197332/

click on "deposit files", and you´ll get version 6.3.0.7000 of Lenovo widcomm bluetooth software which is the same

as original widcomm bluetooth.

  1. Download it.
  2. Extract it to a folder
  3. Only use the file Broadcom_Bluetooth_6.4.0.670.exe out of the zip archive. Drop the rest.
  4. If you´ll click on this .exe file you´ll only get some weird screen all filled up with ????, so you´ll have to use a different way:
  5. Exctract Broadcom_Bluetooth_6.4.0.670.exe once again to a folder and then click on the file setup.exe

Then, the software will install correctly.

Well, this is weird, agreed. I found it out only a few trials. Remember, this software is leaked from Lenovo, but

it is the latest version I found, it is 100% Widcomm Bluetooth Software.

Here you have prove of what Widcomm is doing:

It does not provide the latest widcomm bluetooth software for free, but only for notebook manufacturers.

Widcomm doesn´t give a single hint on this policy on their homepage- private customers seem to be

unimportant for Widcomm- and still no amendment with the update bug in this software- really poor.

But no way to kid me.

BR

Andy

Hello this thing still can happen in May 2013. I am currently restoring a full system backup after facing the same situation. I own a Dell E6410. It started with a bluetooth problem, then a driver update, that lead to an error message, then after reboot, a problem with a driver (compbatt.sys) that I solved easily, and then the BSOD that made me find out that many files had been deleted. Lucky me, all my documents and personal stuff are on the D: Drive, a long time habit with windows ... So even if my Users directory is half empty, I guess this bug did not delete the files on the other drive. After several years of the same ****, Broadcomm really deserves to be sued. I also blame Dell and other laptop manufacturers who seemingly did not take necessary steps to analyse the situation and remove the faulty drivers / warn the users.

It borders on the criminal.  My suggestion that it may indeed be a *civil* matter has attracted the attention of one vendor involved, at least in my case...   Will let you know what happens.

Same thing here. Uninstallation of broadcom bt software from my Lenovo T61 wipes out my Win 7 installation! WTF!???? Found all these threads and posts in many many blogs and forums about this now! I'm working with PCs for 20 years and I'm a system administrator for a huge school network but this is the worst f****** thing I've ever seen! I don't blame Microsoft for that, nor do I blame Lenovo but tell me: how is it possible, that Broadcom is still out there doing business!??? Isn't there a chance to blow their a...... off!? I Although I have a backup, many important files are lost! What can we do to get a response from Broadcom? I can't believe that they didn't fix this sh.... for years now....!?

I cannot believe this... It happened to me yesterday. Not only are the Dell versions of the WIDCOMM drivers generally old and iffy, but any attempt to rectify these problems in [what we all would naturally assume to be] a normal way results in an attempt to wipe your drive. I suppose I am relatively lucky -- I killed the "uninstall" before it "completed" and was able to restore 95% of my files. I have an old backup in a safe that is fairly recent as well, but unfortunately I am on the road trying to work while dealing with this -- and there is no other word for it -- c r a p. ("c r a p" being the absolute nicest way I can describe it now. Had I written this yesterday when I was dealing with the problem, I would likely have used much more colorful words.

I have lost some recent work and personal files that were not on my backup at home and that did not make it out of the Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) volume restore in time. I cannot blame Windows for this (a statement I've never uttered before) and I believe the blame lies directly at the feet of Broadcom and (to a lesser extent) Dell. My system is a Dell 6520 lappy, but I believe Dell just use what Broadcom gives them after performing some basic tests with it. Between this post (and others like it) and what have certainly been *many* tech support calls by others, there are no longer any plausible excuses that these vendors could possibly offer.

I intend to make every effort to notify Dell and ask them why they have not made any attempts (at least that I could find) to solve the problem in concert with Broadcom. Further, I intend to contact Broadcom and ask how this could ever have come to pass. It is not out of the question that I may engage legal representation if Broadcom does not address my grievance(s) in a manner I find completely fitting and acceptable. I will be sure to pass on any resolution, activity, and/or progress which may be of note to others in this thread.

    V/R,

    attriti0n
