Windows Media Player encountered a problem while creating or saving the playlist.

the database may have gotten corupted. I had MANY problems; duplicate songs that wouldn't delete, couldn't find songs that I knew were there, the list goes on. Someone on this site suggested this and it worked - good luck

This problem also occurs because the Windows Media Player library database has become corrupted.

To resolve this problem, clear the Windows Media Player database. To do this, follow these steps:

   1. Exit Windows Media Player.

   2. Click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, and then click OK.

   3. Select all the files in the folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

       Note: You do not have to delete the folders that are in this folder.

   4. Restart Windows Media Player.

Note: Windows Media Player automatically rebuilds the database.

If this does not resolve the problem, clear the Windows Media Player database cache files. To do this, follow these steps:

   1. Exit Windows Media Player.

   2. Click Start, click Run, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft, and then click OK.

   3. Select the Media Player folder, and then click Delete on the File menu.

   4. Restart Windows Media Player. 

 

This worked for me!  You have to reboot and make sure Windows media Network services is not running.  Stop the service before doing this task for it will not work because you can not delete all files and folders specified in the above notes.  Then you can do BOTH the deletes explained above.

Thanks airwater, this pointed me in the right direction.

The SOLUTION I found was simply to open windows explorer, and under Libraries right click on your 'Music' library > Properties > and ensure 'Set save location' is applied to whichever folder you'd like to save playlists to, rip music to, etc in WMP.

Then when I opened up WMP again and went to Organize > Options > Rip Music - my default save location is now listed as the rip folder. I could now also create playlists. Voila!

Limelad, what exactly happens when you try to save a playlist?

I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:

• Reboot the PC.
• Go to Start, type  services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service . If its status is Started , double-click the service and click  Stop .
• Go to Start, type  %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
• In this folder, rename the  Media Player folder to something like Media Player old . If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
• Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

You just happen to be the person I wished to talk to about this EXACT same problem.

Why? Because I did not have this problem until after I installed your program, Windows Media Player Plus!, that I started to have this problem.

I have uninstalled all my media player plugins (including yours), stopped the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, deleted the folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player, deleted the registry keys at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer] and at [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer.

I then ran Windows Media Player, answered all the questions in the setup wizard, opened the player, and tried to create a playlist, and got the same error dialog, "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while creating or saving the playlist."

There is a "Web Help" button on the dialog, but it is worthless.  I found many more possible fixes with a Google search.

Anyway, when I had "Windows Media Player Plus!" installed, whenever I opened the Windows Media Player I got an error message about not being able to add the Party Playlist (or something like that). If I acknowledge the error, I can still use the WMP, but I cannot name playlists.  Uninstalling your plugin did not fix the situation with the playlists.

I would be grateful for any information you could provide on repairing Windows Media Player.

By the way, I love your plugin, because of the only feature I am interested in (being able to pause and play with the spacebar when the WMP is in the foreground).

Again, any help with fixes and/or updates to WMPP! would be apprecaited!

Edit: I managed to resolve the main issue, thanks to reading the post from grant-vz.  Some of my libraries did not have the default save location set.  Once I set them, I was able to created and name playlists in WMP!  Now to reinstall WMPP! and to see if those problems are fixed as well!

Final Edit: After installing Windows Media Player Plus! and doing just a little more tinkering, playlists can now be created, named, saved, and loaded (including the "Party Shuffle".

So the posts here did end up providing me with the solution (specifically the one from grant-vz).

I also have had problems with media player not creating playlists, and it was a problem with the music library as airwater suggests.  After installing Win8 it, if I looked in to the Music library it was trying to use UNC paths to access the locations (e.g. \<COMPUTERNAME>\Users&lt;USERNAME>\Music)

I shared the user folder, and suddenly when I went into the library - it had started to use the local paths instead (C:....), very bizarre!

Anyhow after that I could suddenly save playlists - so make sure and check you Music Library!!
