Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings

Recently, I have noticed a small caution triangle appearing with my network icon on the task bar. When I right click and troubleshoot, it comes with this message. Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings. My internet has been very slow lately, but I'm wondering if this is a problem with my network? or is this something that my ISP has to fix?

(This post is intended for all reporting the problem)

Check Internet Options (from Control Panel or Internet Explorer Tools / Options  /Connections Tab / LAN Settings and make sure Proxy Server is unchecked even if using Firefox.  Check settings in Firefox in Tools / Options /Advanced Connections / Settings  (should be either use system proxy settings or no proxy).

Check for malware especially using malwarebytes.

Try  these two commands in that order in an elevated command prompt.  Do the first one first then reboot and try.  If still bad try the second.

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ipv4 reset

If these don't help, please post the output of an ipconfig /all command

I had the same problem this morning--couldn't connect on one computer but could on the other.  Got the same message about not being able to detect the proxy settings.  However, I used System Restore to reverse some changes that had happened during the night and that corrected the problem.

    proxy server box is unchecked in internet explorer settings. firefox isn't installed. malwarebytes found 0 problems.

    I have this exact same problem as well!

    Recently upgraded my PC-build to a Asus x370 motherboard and then this problem arose. I can circumvent this by unticking the "Automatically detect Proxy settings" in the Proxy settings tab in Windows, but is still does not resolve my issue with not being able to download larger files.

    All of the solutions had no effect on my problem:

    1. I could not access a network printer from my desktop, but could from my laptop. When I tried to print something from the desktop, the printer on the list of printers in "Devices And Printers" dimmed out until I deleted the document, which had an unspecified printing error.
    2. From my laptop I could not access my desktop's shared files either via the Network or Homegroup items in Explorer. When I it wouldn't show anything or in fact any sign there was a desktop. There was no error message, however.
    • I followed your suggestion about Internet Options, and Proxy Server is unchecked. If it matters I normally run Chrome, but I also run MS Edge & Firefox.
    • I have run AVG Internet Security 2017 and it didn't find any malware.

    Other Troubleshooting Efforts

    I right-clicked on the WiFi icon in the system tray and clicked on Troubleshoot, and got the error being discussed in this thread. I then deleted the printer from "Devices And Printers" and tried to reinstall it. Unfortunately it did not find my printer, and when I tried to enter the settings manually I selected the port "HP Discovery Port Monitor (HP Officejet Pro 8600" which is my printer. I then received the error message: "Specified port cannot be added. The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

    I remain unable to print from my desktop or access the document (or any other document) from my laptop so I could use the printer from the latter (which CAN print).

    What do I do?
