Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64.  I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working".  It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded.  I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem.  Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile.  Canon says it is a rights or OS issue.

The scanner works with other software.  MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

Here is the detail from the windows error

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

Sincerely,

David Witteried

Hey GregDaro,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

Refer the link below for more details on fixing a corrupt user profile:

Hope this helps!

    Trobmaster;

I tried your solution, but it didn't work for me.  When I tried to launch MP Navigator, it failed as usual.  When I checked the Temp folder, the Twain001.MTX file was back.

So, I'm still looking for a solution, since I don't have the "MY Web sites on MSN" entry anywhere on my system that I could delete, and creating a new user doesn't fix the problem either.  (These are the only two solutions suggested on the Canon support site.)

Any other suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

    Old Jess :

I too had the MP Navigator problem, and even though there is plenty of information in this thread, none of what I tried was 'exactly' the fix.  Turns out it was sort of a combination of things.

To set the stage, I have a Canon MP960 (multi function device) running on Windows7 Home Premium 32 bit.

I did not have the "MY Web sites on MSN" anywhere on my PC

I did not have the C:\Windows\twain_32\CanonMP960 subfolder on my PC.

I did delete the Twain001.MTX file, but it came right back.

I've heard from others that the following works for more than just the MP960.  Here's what finally succeeded after several hours over a week : )

    • Delete the printer (via Device Manager) and uninstall it's software (via Control Panel)
    • Unplug the printer from the USB port.
    • Go to MyComputer
    • Go to System Properties->Advanced System Settings->Environment Variables->System variables->Path
    • Edit the Path line by adding " ;*C:\Windows\twain_32* MP960" to the end of line (keep whatever line is currently there...just be sure that you include the semi-colon ";" to separate it from anything already there).
    • Download the most up-to-date Canon driver from the Canon site
    • Inside the folder, in the location where you downloaded the file, unzip it and find the file called "Setup##.exe" (where ## might be alphanumeric or whatever, just so long as its the setup executable file).
    • Right click properties on "Setup**.exe", go to compatibility tab of that file
    • Select both "Compatibility Mode for Windows 7" and "Run as Administrator".
    • Click Apply and OK.
    • Double-click "Setup**.exe" and accept the prompts to install
    • Plug the printer back into the USB port
    • Allow Windows to install the Canon software and drivers
    • If asked, reboot the computer to complete installation
    • If NOT asked to reboot, repeat the steps above for running the setup executable file.
    • After install the drivers (yes, again!), you should be prompted to reboot.  If not, reboot manually.

I know this appears lengthy and it was a pain as I had to do this more than a couple of times to get the correct sequence of steps.  I believe the twain_32 subfolder (MP960 in this case) can be changed match your device type or name.

In the end, I found this method FAR better (for me) than setting up a new User Profile, and WAY cheaper than buying a new printer/scanner device : )

Hope this helps you and anyone else affected by Canon's/Microsoft's complete lack of interest in this issue.

    Worked great!

I found a previously installed Twain directory (C:\Windows\twain32, leaving the two suggested files) moved to it to a temp file on the desktop and the program is now working, and the printer scanner can also open it using the scan buttons on the all-in-one printer, it could only act as a printer prior to this.

    Printer Cannon MX700 (just opened)

    Win 7 Pro 32bit

    Socket 478 2.4GHz, 2GB Ram

    Thanks,
