Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64.  I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working".  It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded.  I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem.  Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile.  Canon says it is a rights or OS issue.

The scanner works with other software.  MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

Here is the detail from the windows error

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

Sincerely,

David Witteried

Hey GregDaro,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

Refer the link below for more details on fixing a corrupt user profile:

Hope this helps!

Sorry Natalie, I messed that up on Proposed as Answer, anyway...

This is response I received from Canon and it worked.

We appreciate your continued correspondence regarding your CanoScan LiDE

    200.

If file (or icon) My Web Sites on MSN is found in the folder listed

below, please delete it to resolve the issue.

     1.  Click 'Start' and then 'Computer'.

     2.  On the left-hand pane, click the down arrow beside Local Disk (C:).

     3.  Click the down arrow beside Users to open the folder.

     4.  Click the down arrow beside your username (for example Joe).....At this point,My Web Sites on MSN appeared, so I deleted it and was finished.

     5.  Click the down arrow beside the AppData (Application Data) folder.

     6.  Click the down arrow beside Roaming.

     7.  Click the down arrow beside Microsoft.

     8.  Click the down arrow beside the Windows folder.

     9.  Click the down arrow beside Network Shortcuts folder.

    10.  Locate an icon named My Web Sites on MSN.

    11.  Right-click on My Web Sites on MSN and select 'Delete'.

    12.  After performing this process, attempt to scan.

I hope this information is helpful to you.  Please let us know if we can

be of any further assistance with your CanoScan LiDE 200.

    Thank you for choosing Canon.

    Sincerely,

    George

    Hi David,

I realize I am joining the party pretty late but hopefully you can provide some guidance. I was using my Canon scanner for days with no problem then, like others here, it just stopped working giving me errors about drivers not being installed. The first thing I did was reinstall the drivers. Then I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled the drivers. I restarted my computer each time with no avail. Then I searched and read all of the posts here and still cannot make this work. I searched my system for MP Navigator - found nothing. I navigated to the Network Shortcuts folder you identify here and also checked to ensure all folders and files are NOT hidden but nothing shows up so I cannot follow your instructions to delete the 'My Websites on MSN" folder. I'm not super technical so I'm not really comfortable creating a new user profile and cannot login as another user to test this theory either.

Something else to note, I searched for other scanner models (i.e. Dell) to see if there were posts for other models that stopped working on Win7 and it seems there are problems with other models too. So it may not be a Canon issue but rather MS.

Either way, I am scanning photos for my Grandmother's funeral and I need to get this scanner working right away. Given the event, I am stressed to the max and wanted to throw my computer out of the window last night. I believe you have more patience than me :)

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Natalie
