Canon MP Navigator Stopped working with scanner. Worked under Vista, not Win 7.

Canon scanner Lide 200 worked fine in Vista 64.  I upgraded to Win 7 64 and the interface software stopped working - "MP Navigator EX has stopped working".  It is a BEX error, Fault module MSONSEXT.DLL_unloaded.  I uninstalled, downloaded the newest and reinstalled, same problem.  Canon had me create a new profile, program works in that profile.  Canon says it is a rights or OS issue.

The scanner works with other software.  MP Navigator is a resident program to do copies or copy and email, etc.

Here is the detail from the windows error

I have had the same problem with Win 7 64. I spoke to Canon Tech Support and after an hour during which we tested various things I was told the the problem was with Windows and I should contact Microsoft. I tried creating a new profile which fixed the problem for about a week, then it came back again! The issue may be associated with Windows Update but I am not sure. On this last go around I created a new profile, then copied in the folders and files from the corrupted profile one at a time to see when the problem would start again. After carefully copying files, backing up, testing Mp Navigator, and if necessary restoring the last good setup I discoved that the following file was causing the problem:

C:\Users<user name>\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts\My Web Sites on MSN

Note: This file was not present in my new profile. Also, the icon has the shortcut marker on it, but explorer says it is a folder. There is no file extension.

I eventually copied ALL of the other data from the bad profile to the new one and MP Navigator still worked! I then deleted the offending file from the bad profile and MP Navigator started working there too!

I then reconfigured all of my software and started IE etc. for the first time while watching the Network Shortcuts folder. The offending file has not reappeared yet. I made a shortcut to this location so I can keep an eye on it to see when it appears again.

Hopefully someone at CANON or Microsoft will fix this "corrupted" profile issue.

Sincerely,

David Witteried

Hey GregDaro,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

The issue could be related to a corrupt user profile, since you’ve stated in your post that the program works fine in the other profile you’ve created.

Refer the link below for more details on fixing a corrupt user profile:

Hope this helps!

David Witteried said "I sent an email to Canon regarding this thred so hopefully they are aware of it."

I can assure the forum that Canon are aware as they included the forum as the only answer to my complaint about the scanner function for a MP560 that I've spent many hours trying to solve!

The 'fixes' detailed in this forum did not work for the MP560, the nearest I got was an error message with a new profile saying that the MP Navigator had 'crashed'.

I get the impression that Canon have tweeked existing software that made the MP Navigator work, probably in avirginbeta copy of Windows 7, and instead of testing it properly, have rush released it so that they didn't get complaints that their product didn't have any Windows 7 software.

I have responded to Canon in no uncertain terms concerning the non-compliance of the MP560 version of the Navigator software.

If anyone has any other ideas, please tell the forum!

    Jhoff,

You are right that it is something of a workaround and there are two issues at work here. First why does Canon's software react the way it does and secondly, where does the shortcut to My Websites on MSN come from? I certainly didn't create it and deleting it does allow the Canon software to work.

Like you I had the shortcut reappear about a week after I first fixed it (Feb 3, 2010). Since then it hasn't reappeared.Has anyone been able to tie the creation of the shortcut to a specific event? Also several users have mentioned that other shortcuts in that location have also caused the issue. As I noted in one of my other posts the "shortcut" is something other than a real shortcut, more like an Office XML file in that it is actually a ZIP file with several files inside it (see my post on Feb 9th above).

Who's fault is it? I don't know. If Canon's software follows all the rules for the Windows API, then it's Microsofts fault. Will they fix a problem that affects only one software module written by another company... maybe not. I just hope the two companies get together to figure this out. I sent an email to Canon regarding this thred so hopefully they are aware of it. In the meantime the issue seems to be corrected on my computer as the offending shortcut has not reappeared.

    Sincerely,

    David

That is amazing detective work.  It helped me with the identical problem!  This should be marked as an answer not the canned response from one Microsoft employee that was marked as an answer by another Microsoft employee!

except this isn't a real answer - just a workaround.  The other answer (corrupted profile) isn't a solution either and yes, I'll agree this one is better but again, it's just a workaround.  the "file" that caused the problem can (has for me) come back.  The code (canon's) needs to  not care about it.
