Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you Ryan. The numerous responses that have continued into 2011 agreeing with Patrick should be evidence enough that maybe you are the one in the minority this time.  Your PC can be hooked up to you TV and used as a Blu Ray player, it's not just for watching them on your PC.

I completely agree with you pjturner07.  I also bought a SONY VAIO in Dec. 2010 that already had Windows 7 on it.  It was supposed to be able to play blu rays  also, but there was an update 3 months later and since then the blu ray program no longer works.  We paid a lot of extra money for that feature to only be able to use it about 4 times.  We kept being told they'd look in to it and get back to us, but almost a year later no one has.  I finally gave up after over 20 calls and having spent 2 to 8 hours per call on the phone, or chat, with techs who never did a darn thing but waste my time.  I even had to schedule 3 appointments with them in which I had to take time off of work to try and deal with the issue because they were not available during hours that I was not at work, and then they wouldn't even call at the scheduled appointment times.  I really wish I knew of a way to deal with this problem so that the customers weren't the ones being screwed over, but all I got was a huge run around and huge amounts of exhaustion and frustration.  Having spent 3 days of 8 hours each day dealing with techs, not to mention all the 2 to 4 hour conversations, I believe I was more than patient.

Yo, Here's a NEW scenario:

Total fresh install of Win 7 Premium, on a sony vgn-fw170j

 then tried the Sony downloads of WINDVD in the correct order as mentioned in this thread: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7pictures/thread/a5bf1f3f-33c4-4502-ae2e-42cbd8f9d341?prof=required

But this  does not work!

Then tried the download of Total theatre 5, but no go also.

Why is this not enough?

I paid for Roxio Cine player BD but when I did my fresh install and tried to re-download what I paid for, they wouldn't let me since it was more than 30 days!

Whoa, I never saw that in the fine print. Word of warning to everyone.

Am I missing something?

Sony really seems to suck at Blu-ray on PCs, which is the weirdest thing, as they own most of the Blu-ray license rights and they have the PS3.

I read from your other posts that the Sony helpdesk did not ... help, which might be understandable since this laptop ships with Vista, but it is also certain that Sony tested this Windows 7 upgrade scenario and have the answer somewhere. And they had 2 years to test it since the first Windows 7 Betas.

Several people in that other thread mentioned display drivers as the culprit, you should try that again. Make sure first that you have the latest BIOS, BD/DVD firmware and display drivers directly from the video chipset and BD drive manufacturers' web sites, with no possibly interfering software like AnyDVD, iTunes, or antivirus. If that does not work, check if you can find a previous version of the display driver and try with older drivers, maybe one will work.

Roxio sucks too, but really, it's your fault for not backing up your stuff on an external hard drive or better yet, a remote site. Microsoft offers 25 GB for free on SkyDrive if you have a free live account, all Asus laptops also come with free online storage, although much smaller than SkyDrive.
