Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    "I am not happy", contrary to the TV ads for Windows7. 

    I have spent a long day migrating to Windows 7 from Vista and

    when I was ready to watch a Blu Ray movie, i wasted a couple of hours trying to get Media Center to play it, and searching the web for guidance, and now I see more wasting of time to come.

     I have to hope that the LG website will offer the right codec for my player for Windows7 64 bit .

    I too agree that it is ridiculous that Microsoft has not already taken the appropriate steps to incorporate Blu-ray support within their OS, especially in this day and age with their continual market share losses to Apple. Wake up and actually make your customers happy Microsoft... give us Blu-ray support. This should have been done a long time ago.

    If you all remember correctly Media Center didn't even used to contain MPEG2 codecs and you had to install your own to even watch TV or DVDs so not supporting Blu-ray at this point out of the box isn't suprising.

    There are 2 applications that integrate with Media Center very well for Blu-ray playback, PowerDVD (http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd/overview_en_US.html) and TotalMedia Theatre (http://www.arcsoft.com/estore/software_title.asp?ProductCode=TMT3P)

    Michael's correct, back when DVD movies were just starting to grow in popularity on PC's, Windows, even with Media Center, did not include native DVD playback. The Blu-Ray situation at this point isn't much different.

    Both PowerDVD and TotalMedia Theatre which have been recommended are both fully capable of providing a great Blu-Ray movie playback experience in their stand-alone application or integrated with Media Center.

    Unless I'm mistaken there's currently no OS available which provides native integrated Blu-Ray movie playback, including Windows, Apple's Snow Leopard, or Ubuntu.

    It's entirely possible that in the future Windows and other OS's will add support for it in future releases, I imagine a lot depends on how popular Blu-Ray becomes during the Windows 8 product planning and development cycle. I couldn't comment either way.
