Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    I'm not particularly happy with the fact that Windows Media Center doesn't natively support the new Bluray drive I just got for Christmas but my guess is its a legal issue. The most likely reason Microsoft didn't include native Bluray support is because of all the trouble they get into for bundling software, everytime they bundle or integrate a new feature into Windows that competes with another company's product they get sued for anti-competitve practices. Look at what they are dealing with in Europe where they are now being required to give the users a choice of something like 12 web browsers when you install Windows.

    If they were to include native Bluray playback then Cyberlink, Roxio and every other company that markets Bluray playback software would sue them because if its bundled with the OS then no one will pay for the third party software.

    Oh, i didnt have ultra. i had the bundled program. i do however have a relatively expensive sound card :) Asus Xonar top of the range.

    the fact is, they should have provided a decent program. power DVD barely worked at all.

    Hi there,

    I mean no disrespect but you are falling into the same trap most "users" do.

    I am a MCSE (microsoft certified engineer)

    why do people buy ultimate? business? over basic or premium?

    Not because of "bitlocker" though it is an extra bonus. it's more to do with the features aimed at the administrator.

    Bluray isn't the way forward. it's a stopgap until broadband gets fast enough.

    VM is the future, and with VM comes faster ADSL/SDSL speeds, with faster speeds comes downloadable high definition. we have the technology (wimax) we just need a cash injection to get it out there. sadly the UK at least have invested too heavily in 3G. so we wont be getting wimax anytime soon. however 2160p is on the way and we should be able to stream this content soon enough. we already have HD streaming/downloading services not only on the PC but on the XBOX and PS3

    my advice would be not to build up an extensive bluray library just yet ;) however i to would like bluray support in the meantime! cyberlink sucks!

    I agree with Roleary and SpyderCanopus. I bought Windows 7 for my Media centre PC thinking that it would finally support Blu-Ray Playback. We all know Blu-Ray is becoming the new DVD so we would expect a multi-billion dollar company to integrate Blu-Ray playback in a modern OS.

    And as SpyderCanopus said, BitLocker is such a waste of money. Most the people who have Vista Ultimate dont even know what it does and why they should use it.

    M$ wasted so much money on making HD-DVD Drives for their Xbox 360(when we all knew Blu-Ray was the way forward). What were they thinking?! It would have been a better spend if they sorted out this Blu-Ray playback nonsense.
