Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Running Windows 7, 64-bit, and bought a Samsung internal BD-ROM drive (SH-B083) for my desktop for ~$120 at Frys.  That drive included the Cyber Link BD Suite that has sufficed all of my BD needs.  It would be nice to have a codec for WMP or Media Center to integrate with other features, but to watch movies in full 1080p, my current drive works fine.  Hope that helps those of you who still haven't purchased a BD-ROM drive.  If you already have one, the manufacturer of your BD-rom drive might have a solution for you.  Highly recommend users to upgrade to W7, or at least Vista (I used to be a Vista hater myself, but came to peace with it after SP1).

    Just a little reminder: MAC OS has no support for BLU RAY. In fact the company too has stated that they look forward to digital distribition just like MS did.

    After spending the night dealing with this issue, I am extremely unhappy. I bought a SONY VAIO that has a blu ray sticker on it. It played blu ray discs until I upgraded from vista to windows 7. I've had nothing but problems with this computer since I purchased it, and I regret spending the money on this ridiculous computer. I'm writing this note on my mac , by the way.

    I agree this is upsetting.  Many of us are aware 3rd party products are available but much of it is misleading.  Many blueray drives come with software but fail to mention it's shareware & requires an additional purchase to make it work which to me is ____!  Its like purchasing windows7 then installing only to realize you have to once again make another purchase for it to be viewable on your samsung display!  And as if that isn't bad the version of cyberlink which plays blueray costs nearly as much as windows 7 upgrade!  Politicians had better get a handle on this problem because its bankrupting everyone!!
