Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Your Blu-Ray player in your PC came w/proprer codes/sfotware for playback. Contact the manufacturer of your PC or BluRay player to obtain free software for BluRay playback or visit their website for downloading and installing on your own.

    Don't blame Microsoft, blame Sony. There are plenty of people that don't have or need Blu-ray playback. They don't want to put out $25-30 just for a license for Blu-Ray when they won't use it.

     

    If you want BluRay playback in Windows, there are solutions. Buy them. But don't blame Microsoft. They can't provide everything for free. They backed the better solution which wouldn't have required you to pay major dollars in royalties to Sony. 

    Ok, they can't provide the license for free. So why don't they sell it, for those who want ?

    And why do they try to dissuade people to use 3rd party software ? (see the note by Amrita M, October 26).

    I think MS is the one to blame.
