Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

Both Cyberlink Power DVD 10 and Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater can be integrated into Windows Media Center meaning Blu-ray discs can be launched from within WMC. I use a program called MyMovies (http://www.mymovies.dk) in conjunction with AnyDVD HD from Slysoft and TotalMedia Theater. My movies are stored on a separate server computer running Windows Home Server and are served up to my HTPC which is connected to my Sony HD TV. From within the MyMovies setup, you can configure external players for whatever type of content you want to play (i.e., you can have WMC play DVD's, avi's, mpegs, etc., and then have TotalMedia Theater play Blu-rays).

@Geoff_M — Your computer with a BD (Blu-ray Disk) drive most likely has a BD player software installed, or on a separate CD/DVD disk. If that's the case, the player also installed a BD codec that should be compatible with WMP/WMC. If you don't have such a software, try asking your computer's manufacturer for it.

Other options: Free codec packs such as shark007.net's enable you to play the BD m2ts video files directly, but it's not the full BD experience with the BD menu and audio/subtitle configuration can be tricky. Software such as free DVD Passkey also allow you to rip the BD on your disk for easier playback.

ENOUGH with the blame game.

I agree that a Blu-ray codec would cost money. I agree that some third party software vendors have Blu-ray playback applications that work in Windows 7. I acknowledge that some people rip Blu-ray disks, jump through hoops, and end up with a way to view the original movie.

I'm not interested in any of that.

I have Windows Media Center hooked up to my HD TV. The PC (Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit) has a Blu-ray drive. I can play DVDs, but I can't play Blu-ray movies.

My question is this:

What do I need to do? What do I need to do to get Blu-ray support _in_Media_Center_ (ie: don't launch another app - do it within media center).

I'll (reluctantly) paly the money. Microsoft - what should I buy?
