Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

Well VLC and Linux don't play blu-ray either, so it's not a question of cost, more like a bad business decision.

All I have to say to this BS, cesorz, is $200. What does VLC cost? $0. Linux? $0. Even the shiny, skittle $#!tting, unicorn-on-a-cloud MacOSX is something like $100, last time I anted up.

Cry me a river. MS seriously blew it. I'm the customer and I'll stay pissed, thank you. It's another $50 to $100 ON TOP of the $200 I'm in already, just to play blurays. My early-adopted Samsung BP-1600 was less than that!

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month on a computer I put together with parts from Fry's, and finally went the extra mile, spending $189 at Fry's to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate so my kids could play their XP games and we could enjoy blurays through windows media center, and guess what?

Win7 speaky no bluray!??! Are you guys kidding?! $200 and no bluray?! WT unbelievable F!

Well, you've fortified my opinion of this company, thank you. This will be the last W7, or any, if I can at all help it, purchase from you guys. It's Mac and Linux from here on out. In fact, I'm going to skip the company upgrade from XP to W7 on my work computer and move to linux there as well.

Are you stupid? Mac's can't play blu-rays. Seriously, do people on here do any sort of research?

The microsoft rep already said it as plain as day. BLU-RAY is patented technology. That means Sony is trying to bleed microsoft for money so that they can use it natively on their OS.

You can't play blu-rays on itunes. VLC media player, which is the best open source media player, can't even play blu-rays, why would you expect windows media player to be able to?

"WAAAAH! WAAAH! I thought windows 7 was the best but it sucks because it can't play blu-ray!" You want to complain, take it up with Sony. Until they release a free plug-in for Windows, there is no support. Keep using powerDVD or whatever else crappy program came with your BD-drive. Or better yet, please get a Mac. Good luck playing your blu-rays on your 18x DVD-drive. Moron.
