Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    VLC and WMP can play the m2ts files, but that's not what I call playing Blu-ray: VLC cannot play a Blu-ray disc, nor a ripped BD.

    By playing, I mean reading the BD menu and everything, not just opening the biggest .m2ts file hoping it's the movie and not an extra.

    Open Disc has only 3 options: DVD, Audio CD and SVCD/VCD. Or am I missing something?

    Well VLC and Linux don't play blu-ray either, so it's not a question of cost, more like a bad business decision.

    Wrong, VLC absolutely does play Blu-ray.

    Go use something else then JackWadd.  If they don't wanna do blu ray then go be a mac queen.

    I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month on a computer I put together with parts from Fry's, and finally went the extra mile, spending $189 at Fry's to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate so my kids could play their XP games and we could enjoy blurays through windows media center, and guess what?

    Win7 speaky no bluray!??! Are you guys kidding?! $200 and no bluray?! WT unbelievable F!

    Well, you've fortified my opinion of this company, thank you. This will be the last W7, or any, if I can at all help it, purchase from you guys. It's Mac and Linux from here on out. In fact, I'm going to skip the company upgrade from XP to W7 on my work computer and move to linux there as well.

    When you did your research before spending all that money on W7 Ultimate, did you see something that indicated W7 supported Blu-Ray natively? Or for that matter, do you have something that indicates Mac or Linux support Blu-Ray?

    Guess what, if you had read through this thread (instead of just posting blindly), you would know that Mac, Linux, whatever don't support Blu-Ray either - so exactly what will "Mac and Linux from here on out" do for you?

    I still don't understand how you bought a PC with a Blu-Ray drive and didn't receive a player as part fo the cost, unless you decided to "cheap out" and buy a barebones OEM drive. I also don't understand why you are upset with MS rather than the PC maker who sold you a computer (or the drive manufacturer)  with a Blu-Ray drive and no way to use it.
