Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    This thread must be too long for @lesiz to read, there's no Blu-ray on Mac either.

    Actually it's even worse on Macs, you need to run PowerDVD under Windows emulation or something similar AFAIK.

    For Bu-ray, the codecs are not just the ability to play the .m2ts video files, but also to display the disc's menus and whatever Blu-ray specific features that are part of the specs. Without this ability, you have to point your media player to folders like BDMV\STREAMS, and to guess which one out of 100+ .m2ts files is the feature film. It's not too difficult, it's usually the biggest one at about 20-25 GB, but even if .m2ts is recognized by WMP (I can't tell anymore, I installed Shark007 codec pack over my WMP,) you'll still miss a lot of the meta-information present in index.bdmv, which basically described the whole disc's structure. Open a Blu-ray disc in Windows Explorer to see the complexity of the structure.
