Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Or you could purchase those codecs.  There's always that.

    I don't see why so many people attack MS for not having blu-ray playback integrated in WMC. Why they should pay Blu-ray license fees for each and every copy of Windows when it's absolutely not clear how many of Windows owners will use this feature? Apart from that, there is already more than one Blu-ray player software that offers WMC integration.

    if u guys remember think back a little the xbox 360 would play the hd dvd and the play station would play blu ray, i'm sure there was a bridge or two burnt in the fight between hd dvd and blu ray and i think everyone knows who won...

    with microsoft backing the hd dvd they'll probably never have the ability to play the blu ray, but u never know, microsoft has more money than the pope and maybe even a bit more influence.

    Sony really seems to suck at Blu-ray on PCs, which is the weirdest thing, as they own most of the Blu-ray license rights and they have the PS3.

    I read from your other posts that the Sony helpdesk did not ... help, which might be understandable since this laptop ships with Vista, but it is also certain that Sony tested this Windows 7 upgrade scenario and have the answer somewhere. And they had 2 years to test it since the first Windows 7 Betas.

    Several people in that other thread mentioned display drivers as the culprit, you should try that again. Make sure first that you have the latest BIOS, BD/DVD firmware and display drivers directly from the video chipset and BD drive manufacturers' web sites, with no possibly interfering software like AnyDVD, iTunes, or antivirus. If that does not work, check if you can find a previous version of the display driver and try with older drivers, maybe one will work.

    Roxio sucks too, but really, it's your fault for not backing up your stuff on an external hard drive or better yet, a remote site. Microsoft offers 25 GB for free on SkyDrive if you have a free live account, all Asus laptops also come with free online storage, although much smaller than SkyDrive.
