Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Just powered up a new Inspiron15R laptop, Win7 Home x64, i5 3GB, Intel HD graphics, BD-ROM, 720HD display with Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.5 included. After all the usual new system configuration hoops/updates, a Netflix BD plays fine in both PowerDVD and Media Center.  I didn't bother with MediaPlayer.

    Philosophically, I'm on the fence about licensing and having to buy codecs. I remember back when DVDs first came out and I initially had to purchase a codec to play them in Win XP (Home and Pro) MediaPlayer.  Now it seems that DVD codecs are included with Win 7/Vista but BluRay codecs are now "extra".

    Don't be a little girl.

    WOW that is so helpful.  I don't know if I can contain myself.  Why bother putting something so totally and utterly useless.  Are you useless, stupid or just plain ignorant? By now I think it has been established that a 3rd party program is needed.  There are multiple ones out there and sites that rate and describe them so anyone should be able to find a program to fit the needs they have.

    PowerDVD is a bloated piece of junk. Don't waste your money on this.
