Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

 

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

thanks for the automated middle finger.  We all appreciate Microsoft's support on the issue of loosing the format war with HDDVD. 

Perhaps they cant afford to include the codex from Sony in the cost of the OS.

well now for the supports advice.  i suggesting getting the driver/player from a wonderful virus laden and buggy 3rd party program.  Good Luck.

Why should they pay $20 for Windows for a "feature" they never use?

But they wouldn't have to. Just as there are different versions of Windows anyway (Home Basic, Home Premium, Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise etc), just include Bluray playback in the most expensive one, and add an overhead to the cost.

Or better still, make it an official purchasable add-on for those that want it properly integrated into the current Movie Library, without having to rely on 3rd parties to make it work.

I don't care what anyone says, I have tried both PDVD and TMT and they don't integrate *properly*. They do a good job, but you can still tell you are not in the native MC interface.

Sorry to bring this thread back again - I just happened to be searching to see if Microsoft had progressed.

What's up with Micro soft, can't say you don't have engineers to solve issues with problems with Blu-Ray playback or record.  If I had of known about this, before hand, Windows 7 Pro, would not have been purchased, and installing so it wouldn't play.  Window's Media Center should be able to handle any format of Disc, whether they be Audio, Video, DVD's HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray formats.  Micro Soft and it's engineer's and designer's should have known this from the start.  I pay for your software and it doesn't work.  I should be able to get a refund because Micro Soft fumbled the ball and now your engineers say to go to a 3rd party and even though it doesn't endorse using this software is at your own risk.  That's like buying your soft ware and then when I find out it doesn't do one of the things I expected from it, you hold a knife to our throats and send us to 3rd party vendors that you don't endorse, is just plain Ludicrous.  There should be a software patch that will fix this issue, and fast too.  Patience is a virtue, but theft by omission is even worst.  Micro Soft certainly fall on it's sword and get this fixed fast.

That's because DVD codecs cost almost nothing but the programmers' effort (and maybe a few bucks to use the licensed DVD logo,) but Sony and alt. saw a big money-making opportunity there and chose to license for a huge fee every aspect of BluRay from the start.

This is absolutely not tolerable since they are in a situation of monopoly and there is no other alternative for true HD content. Hopefully this license will disappear eventually, or its cost will go down. I can't even start to fathom how many hundreds of millions this is bringing to the licensees every year just by doing nothing, long after the full R&D cost has been defrayed. There's even a few cents on each pressed BD, and guess who has the only BD pressing facilities in the whole world? Sony.

I am not buying any PS3, TV, BD/DVD player or any other device from Sony, their attitude is just too arrogant, it's an insult to customers. It's already a pain in this globalized world that they kept a BD regional zoning similar to DVD's, and that every BD device now needs to connect to the Internet and self-update just to play BDs just because of a stupid copy protection design, but the license fee on top is just too much.
