Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    I use UFUSoft Blu-ray Player,it is good and cheap

    I understand this is several years later, but this comes up as one of the first search results for "blu-ray windows 7".

    To Patrick and the other torch/pitchfork carriers: blame Sony, who claims exclusive rights to the Blu-Ray movie format, it's codecs and encryption keys. They license this out to 3rd party developers for their software. Windows would cost a good bit more if it had this support integrated. There are open source applications that can help you rip and decode BD movies, but no players.

    Anyways, don't take this out on Microsoft's support who provided a correct and acceptable answer. Blame Sony, or blame your computer's manufacturer who did not include a Blu-Ray player/software suite.

    HI Patrick.

    Nero 2014 platinum works with windows 7 to play Blu-Ray discs and it also has a Blu-Ray burning program. It is a bit on the costly side £79,99p but its worth it.

    Thank you for not including the license in the standard version of Windows media player, I say thank you because I would much prefer to buy it on my own if I actually did want to use that feature than be forced by pay for the OS that had optional licenses installed thus increasing my cost.  so yes it may be a tad inconvenient but it is far better than being forced to essentially buy things I do not need nor do I want.
