Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Hello all,,

    I'm the proud owner of a new Acer PC with a bluray player included (like your dvd player / cd rom etc etc).

    I'm so amazed that windows 7 has not integrated bluray playback support in their mediaplayer.

    My guess it's that Blu-ray is a Sony invention right? MS vs Sony...X-BOX vs PS....i don't know...

    seems to me that MS is a little bit jealous, maybe they hoped on the HD DVD a little bit too much.

    Anyway, Windows 7 is a marvelous product, haven't had any problems with it sofar. However, the non-support is truly disappointing. I have faith that someday MS will incorparate this in WMP.

    That's the whole point of this thread, we'd rather pay Microsoft for a native optional solution in WMP/WMC. And by the way, PowerDVD does not allow playback of Blu-ray discs ripped into a folder, like you can do for ripped DVDs.

    Go to http://www.cyberlink.com/ Cyberlink is a good company and buy PowerDVD 11 it's cost $100 Ulta Edtition.

    Standart $ 50.

    Then you can play everthing in the world bluray discs and many other things!!!!!!!!!!!

    Not a workaround either, the thread is about playing Blu-ray discs, not HD files.

    I.e. being able to recognize the Blu-ray disc intro, menu, previews, extras, audio and subtitle tracks, interactive features, integrate the disc or ripped disc into your media library, etc.

    Basically recognize all the metadata in the other folders and file types, because the .m2ts files all have weird names like 00274.m2ts that are not very helpful to find out which file corresponds to which episode or extra.
