Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

Well i must say, I put on my old copy of Power DVD8, with BD addon's, and apart from lack on Mediacentre integration it appear fine for us. So everything works on media centre, tv tuner, music, dvd's except 3 things. Thats liveable.

however BBC iplayer would be nice if it integrated

and power dvd, it might on later versions i dont know, but i'm not paying £100 to save myself 5 seconds minimising MC and loading PDVD.

and MKV files don't play, I use VLC.

I have been running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit since release and Vista before that. I even went for XP Media Centre Edition. I've always run the aerial into the PC and used with our main large flat screen.

Yeah there have been problems over the years but they are always solvable and I can upgrade components when I like at reasonable cost, which has never been the case with Apple.

I very recently bought a Blu-Ray drive for the Media Centre PC, it cost me £44 and came with a free copy of Cyberlink PowerDVD 10. I installed the software with default settings and Blu-ray discs play beautifully though Windows Media Centre. No dropped frames, great sound, full remote control.

Its not all bad

northstar69 - look in Device Manager and check your drive appears. If so remove and restart PC which should force any hardware drivers to reload

Have you some Blu-ray software?

i bought a hp computer with windows 7 and it also came with blu ray but i keep having to call to get it fixed cause it acts like there is no disc in the player..i think they delete the driver and reinstall i dont know much about computer and my warrenty is over need help

Nor, will I buy Microsoft again!! Try Apple next time see if they have more respect for their customers?

It's the same with Apple or on Linux, no native Blu-ray support unless your purchase a third party app. £15 or £30 seemed pretty cheap, must have been a limited or time-bombed edition.

Anyway, better rant on the Building Windows 8 blog now. Still waiting for a post on the new WMP.
