Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

Is there some part of Patented that you don't understand?

To answer your question because Microsoft does not want to invest the money developing codecs that they would then have to sell to you because legally they would not be allowed to just give them to you for free since they do not hold the patent on Blu Ray.

If they did make such a codec you would be here asking them why the heck they are asking you to pay for it.

Hello, the simple answer is for Microsoft to offer the software needed to add Blueray support for a small fee and make it available for purchase and download through the Microsoft Store. This software should be written and support by Microsoft so as to avoid the problems of using third party software. This way users who don't want the feature do not have to pay for it. This said their are hundreds of features in Office and Windows that users do not use. So by RyanTAdams argument all of these features should be taken out and the cost of the Windows OS reduced. Microsoft is a smart company and they can come up with a way to provide Blueray support. I didn't think Microsoft's goal was to just meet the status quo of the other OS's that don't support Blueray either. I would think Microsoft's goal is to have the best OS and providing native Blueray support or a Microsoft supported Blueray add-on would be a great way to demonstrate the superiority of the Windows OS.

@Bikky, you can play MKV and many other video file types straight from WMP/MC with Shark007 codec pack. If you use x64 Windows Media Center, you need to install the x64 components on top of the codec pack.

I know this looks like a hacker name, but his codec pack has been trustworthy for many years.

This is the only codec pack you'll ever need for WMP/MC.
