Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    That has been my thought too. I had found a program to allow use of that Bluray, but

    then I erased the hard drive and reinstalled, but forgot the program that I had used.

    The best and cheapest solution is to go buy a stand alone Blu-Ray player and forget running that format on your Windows OS PC. The 3rd party licensed software providers will also try to rip you off by not allowing you to use all of the Dolby functions as well with their basic packages.

    lol think this look how long it took xbox to play blu rays until the xbox one came out. The ps3 (sony) had it and the Xbox 360 (Microsoft) had the hd player which you had to buy so don't expect toooooo much from Microsoft as they don't have the resources (brains) to update the programme. had to make my own codec. really don't recommend downloading another programme but that's the thing you don't have no other option.

    I finally gave up on it and decided to buy a bluray player that plugs into my monitor. Actually, I had to buy a new monitor, but when I saw a 32 Inch widescreen TV for sale at a price LESS than a monitor, I bought it instead. Now, I use it as a monitor, and when the PC is busy doing something that takes some time, I simply switch to TV and watch the news for awhile. Furthermore, I can watch bluray videos on it, and if it needs an update, I just go to the manufacturer's home site, download and install the latest version. Piece of cake. No more hassle with the bluray DVD recorder/player in the PC.
