Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Based on this tread I will not be upgrading to Windows 8 or future versions of the O/S. I will be taking the advice of friends and trying UNIX instead.

    Enough with the random policies of a company grown too big for itself.

    And Microsoft is wondering why their products are going down. I try to install the new windows 8 product in my pc and it did not work at all. After running their software to check if my pc was compatible, I was told that it was safe to install the new operating system. "Ns", my pc powered down and never power back up again. Fortunately I was able to restored windows 7 back into the pc and I did not loose any of my files. I called tech support and to my surprise, I was told that the reason why the installation did not work, was because the windows 8 operating system was a 32 bit system and my pc was a 64 bit system. If I let Microsoft check my PC with their compatibility software, than how in **** the wrong version was down loaded into my pc? In all, what else is going down in the Microsoft products line? So far, no Blu-ray compatibility, wrong diagnostic software, bad internet explorer, and lock of responsibility toward the customer.

    My question will be, Is this the future that Microsoft wants for its product?

    You are 100% right. To think that Microsoft will act like a little store on the middle of the block  is ridiculous.

    I totally agree here myself. I mean what Microsoft has done here would be the same as going to buy a smart phone and getting one that only plays polyphonic ringtones. I don't understand how any major company out there such as Sony, LG, Sanyo, and Vizio just to name a few, can make any Blu-Ray movie readable on their players yet Microsoft can't get Blu-Ray movies to read in their media player.
