Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

wow! I sure started a fire there!lol..I'm no serious computer guy, but not a total rookie either, but it just seems really dumb to me that my computer came with a Blu-ray drive, and won't play blu rays...what's next, "Supercharged" badges on cars with a hamster in a wheel on crack under the hood?? lol I got myself a playstation, and watch my blu rays on there now anyway...besides, the puter's in the bedroom, and who wants to doze off watching a movie, only to find the puter's been on all night?..(no remote), so, screw it..I think Microsoft has made an error there either way...just sayin'..

Sony is the reason Windows cannot support Blu Ray. Sony and the MPAA are the reason you cannot play blu ray discs on a PC that does not have HDCP compliant hardware. In order to prevent piracy, they treat their consumers like criminals. I don't worry about this, as I never purchase Sony products, and I only have 4 blu ray titles. Fortunately, streaming is the future, and once the genie has been let out of the bottle, they can't stop it. But they'll sure try.

Sony was also part of creating the DVD format and that eventually became a native part of the Windows OS. People should expect to pay royalties for products they do not develop yet incorporate in there products. This goes for all companies, who usually pass down this cost in some form to the consumer in an attempt to recoups associated costs of providing the service. The idea here is that they now add it to Windows 8 Media Center since it is a stand alone product not affecting the cost of the operating system. Just remember that for every Media Center currently sold there are royalties paid for using the DVD format built in natively. With that said, a stand alone Media Center could (AND SHOULD) have native Blu-ray Movie playback where it can be treated in the same way native DVD support is treated. And yes it leads good for Sony, but it already had with DVD.
