Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Top comment/answer Patrick Mac and others! I am completely with you on that. To nickel & dime customers is indicative of the large corporation's attitude towards its customers. While Microsoft has "taken a beating" http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/07/microsoft-profits-take-a-beating-in-spite-of-record-fourth-quarter/

    they still managed to write off $6.2 billion in goodwill. You would think that including a codec for Blu-ray might just be possible At no extra cost to the customer?

    It provides other providers a source of revenue which keeps the wheels turning.

    Or...

    We could add a few £ onto the cost of WIndows to pay for the required licence. Either way you and other would probably complain that windows costs too much.

    Damned if they do...

    There have been some very good answers in this thread, and some really  dumb answers in this thread. The fact is that MS gets to pick and choose which licensees it wants to purchase and incorporate into its Windows OS. They have chosen to remove the Dolby licensing that came standard with Windows 7 (above starter version) for Windows 8. Why? Really why? I have no idea, and neither will you - unless your friends with Mr. Balmer. Sometimes you just gotta take a bite outta that $#!t sandwich, and this is one of those times.

    Somebody pointed this out earlier that none of the OS platforms - Windows, OSX and iOS, various Linux (especially Linux ya cheapos) or Android or even Chrome, don't support native Blu-ray playback. Streaming is the future, whether you or I like it or not. I don't like it, I like having a physical copy. I also have the patience to make this all work. I know a lot of people don't have the time or desire or knowledge to make it work - but there have been some good posts on how to make it work as painlessly as possible.

    Thank you all for the discussion, and especially for those of you who actually wanted to provide answers in the Microsoft Answers Forum. To the venters and the ravers - I get where you're coming from, but its been 3 years now and Microsoft is moving backwards, not forwards, on this issue - so its time for you to move on as well.

    just use divx. proffesionally free program to play blue rays. lol why are most of the comments only coming now 3 years later....:P
