Windows 7 Media player will not play back BluRay disc's

I just installed Windows 7 premium home,full retail 64 bit version. I was surprised to find media player does not support BluRay playback. I read the previous post in this forum and see, as far back as May, that Microsoft was aware of the codec issues with BluRay playback on Win. 7

What is Microsoft doing to solve this glaring issue. BluRay has been around for a long time and I'm sure thousands of Windows 7 customers are going to be in the same boat as me. There are NO codec available through a Google search ( 64 bit) and I would be very reluctant to use one off the internet anyway (Virus issues)

Hi Patrick,

As we know that Blu-Ray is a patented technology so it requires appropriate codecs to be purchased and hence we cannot include it in our Operating System.

To play a Blu-ray Disc, you need to use a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray playback and a device capable of reading Blu-ray Discs.

    Slight correction, not 2 years, but 5: Everything really started in 2006, the first 50GB BD commercial movies, the first 50GB dual layer BD burner, etc. Even as far as 2000 for the first prototypes.

    By the time Windows 8 releases, it will be 6 years old technology, i.e. a couple of centuries in IT time units.

    @bobanders Nobody is bitter at Microsoft, the HD DVD / Blu-ray battle happened years ago and is long forgotten. The only problem now is one of greed, with multiple license fees collected on every Blu-ray drive, software and even each Blu-ray disc. We are basically paying 3 fees each time we watch a BD movie. The latter 2 fees for software and disc should disappear, especially for software.

    Correction to myself: Since Sony prints all BDs for all movie studios, we pay a fourth fee to Sony every time we watch a BD movie.

    Agree about Windows 8.

    If you buy the ultimate version of the ultimate OS you expect it playing any 2+ years old media format. I understand it is not bundled on every Windows version but the Ultimate... Come on!

    Why would you buy a new and rather expensive OS? It boots up quicker, nice. It has a new GUI, nice. It manages RAM in a more effective way, nice.

    I'd keep Windows 7 Ultimate with a 3rd party solution for blu ray, xvid, mkv, mp4, ac3, ogg... Or buy Windows 8 Ultimate if I can play all that formats out of the box.

    Let us not forget that Microcrap was in the HDDVD camp, thus they are bitter and choose NOT to support blu-ray.  I believe that to be a good thing since Microcrap usually screws up everything they do anyone.  Who wants buggy work-half-the-time blu-ray software?
