Glad to know that you are issue has been fixed now Lowey58. Thank you MJC_UK for pointing Lowey58 in the right direction. This will help the other users with similar issue as well.

In most cases the Antivirus Software prevents the scan or installation of other software on the computer. In those scenarios it would be better to disable antivrus softwareand then re-enable the same once done with the scan/installation of the software.

yeah tried all of the solutions and none of them work

honestly I'm getting kind of tired of always having this problem, I try to run a system restore and it tells me to run a disc check, and when I do it tells me I need to run system restore, wasn't windows 7 designed specifically to avoid such redundancies? and all this started because of service pack one

I can't even just re-install windows because of a bad sector that your operating system can't fix

it's a good thing I hate apple and refuse to use Linux

what I need is to roll back my computer to before SP1, so maybe someone could tell me how to do so manually rather than relying on system tools that refuse to work?

I tried all of the proprosed solutions:

1.  Uninstalling Anti-virus  (no joy.)

2.  Chkdsk c: /f /r            (no joy.)

3.  Removing recently installed programs.  Removed (3) recently installed programs before coming to the conclusion that this is not working.

4.  Safe mode boot / system restore.  (no joy.)

Solution:  Run the hard drive as the second drive on another windows 7 system.  Run scandisk (check both boxes.)  Let it run.

Move the drive back to the original system and bang!!  it works!!!

Had to reinstall some programs but beats reinstalling everything or re-imaging.

Hope this helps somebody get through this non-sense.

I don't think it is an AVG issue.  I think it's a Windows issue.  Just today, I went round and round with "Cannot open volume for direct access" message while trying to run "chkdsk /R c:"

It turns out that I had to completely remove Norton Security Suite 4 from the machine before it would successfully run.  After running chkdsk, I installed Norton once again and went right back to the "Cannot open volume for direct access" message.  I spoke directly with Norton tech support and they could not solve the problem.  The thing is, I have six identical machines and they all exhibit the exact same behavior.

The only software "recently installed" on my computer was Microsoft's updates still I got this chkdsk error message on startup. I tried the solution suggested of starting from the Win7 DVD and that didn't fix the problem.

Fortunately the other solution suggested of unistalling the virus protection - I use Norton 360 - worked just fine.

I had to reinstall Win 7 totally, did not activate it.

Fortunately, I had an Acronis backup from the previous day. I restarted with the Acronis disk and got everything back. I was in an infinite loop of this chkdsk error code. Nothing else would work. Acronis has saved my bacon many times in the past couple of years (I'm sure Norton Ghost would also do the same). It's 50 bucks well spent on Amazon. Try Acronis 2011 for Win 7.
