Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

    This didn't work for me.

    I have an Asus Xonar Essence ST soundcard.

    Originally I thought the lag was caused by my onboard sound card, but even with this 160€ sound card the lag persists.

    I don't have any other volume controllers in my playback devices except their own volume.

    This is very disturbing, my sound card has a nice karaoke feature I can't use because I have to sing 1-2 sec before the actual music is playing.

    Seriously microsoft, this OS is now over a year old and it still doesn't work, seriously this is unacceptable.

    So naike, you're saying that a 160€ sound card, with beta drivers after more than one year of W7 out in the market, has not a simple sound manager (well, i'm guessing here, you don't say) where you can adjust the mic and line in volumes, and you're blaming MS? Sorry, but what I read there it's that Asus is enjoying your money a lot while doing nothing to fix the latency issue. Again, not MS fault.

    Did you try installing old but reliable drivers for Vista or XP in compatibility mode? 3 days ago I've installed W7 Home Premium in an old Athlon XP 2800, mobo Asus A7V600X, integrated sound card Asus AC97, latest drivers available from early 2007, and it's working flawless, no latency or delay issues.

    So, uninstall the sound card, remove the drivers, install fresh ones (or old ones in compatibility mode) from Asus site, disable the automatic updates just in case W7 decides to install different drivers (that happens), adjust the volumes in the player tab for the mic and line in, uncheck the "listen to this device" in the recording tab for mic and line in and, very important, do not try to record the mic or line in at the same time as the stereo mix, or you'll get delay again.
