Microphone delay when recording in Windows 7

Since upgrading from Vista to Win7, my microphone input has a delay of 500ms to 1s when recording.  This is most notable in apps like Ventrilo.  Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Everyone,

Please see my earlier replies. No functionality has been removed in Windows 7. If you have an audio driver and codec that exposes the hardware loopback, it will still be present on the Levels tab of the Speakers device. However, not all drivers expose this. If you had this option on XP and load the same audio driver, it should be exposed on Windows 7. Same with the stereo mixer. If the audio driver exposes it, it will be available. It is hidden by default on Vista/Windows 7. But on the Recording tab if you right click in the open area and select show disabled devices, you can enable it. If a Stereo Mix device is not shown, then the audio driver is not exposing one. If you had this option on XP, then please try installing the same driver version that was previously installed.

    No man you don't sound like a jerk at all.... it's the truth. I'm still surprised this hasn't been acknowledged by MS at all yet. We've been going at this for months. I guess they think we don't know what we're talking about or something. Great reaction to customers who support them!

    Hi Chris;

    Thanks for the help!! I followed your steps, and my latency issues have been resolved, but only for my MIC / line-in.  Unfortunately I cannot figure out how to 'unmute' a USB audio device. 

    To clarify, I am recording with a guitar.  When I plug my guitar into the line in / mic jack (using a standard 1/4" to 1/8" converter) I can record by 'unmuting' the microphone, under the 'levels' tab for the speakers.  As mentioned above, after d/l the latest 'realtek' updates, my latency issues have been resolved.  When using a USB 'patch-cord/cable' I do not see an option to 'unmute' it under the speaker's 'levels' tab.  The only way I can hear the audio is if I click the 'Listen to' feature; the latency issue persists.  Obviously, as you said earlier, the 'listen to' feature will cause delay. 

    With that being said, is there any way to 'unmute' a USB audio recording device?  Please note that the device appears under the 'recording' tab, and the volume meter shows activity when I play (the levels are also appropriately set).  As mentioned above, if I click the 'listen to' button, I can hear the audio, but with delay; therefore it would seem to me that the device is simply not exposed within the speaker 'levels'.

    P.S. I downloaded ver. R2.45 from the RealTek site.

    Hi Saculdralla,

    The inbox USB Audio class driver does not support this. Which specific USB device are you using? Does the IHV provide their own driver, or do they say to use the inbox USB Audio driver?

    Thanks for the quick response!

    By the way, sorry to all for 'Proposing As Answer'; I clicked the button accidently (not sure how to undo).

    Anyways, my USB device is second hand, so I'm not sure of the IHV.  Nonetheless, it was a gift, so i don't mind picking up a new one.  At least that way I'll be able to know what drivers to install (I'll steer clear of devices which suggest using the Inbox Drivers).

    P.S. for everyone still complaining about this issue, take a few minutes to read the previous posts by Chris.  It has resolved the delay issue for my line-in jack.  If you are using a MIDI with a USB line-in (or simply using a USB cord for mic, intrument, etc), you may require to download specific drivers from the respective IHV.
